The nation braces as subzero winds from northwest Canada push temperatures below zero across the Midwest and Northeast. Death toll rises to nine from cold and snow with scattered flurries from Kentucky to New York and a mild Southwest offering respite with 70s and 80s in California and Arizona.

Loss amount was not yet determined by noon today.
Soldiers Grove Our Savior's Lutheran church was destroyed by fire on Friday after two hours of effort by firefighters from Soldiers Grove and Gays Mills in near zero temperatures. They saved an electric organ a piano and other equipment including a communion service set. Insurance on the building was $20 000 but not enough to cover the loss. The brick church over 50 years old had been remodeled recently and firemen suspect sparks from welding equipment used to repair the heating plant ignited the blaze.
Two waves of Nationalist Chinese bombers attacked two Red ships east of Yushan today in pre-dawn raids. Air force officials said the ships, each about 2 tons, were hit and southeast of Yushan, located 32 miles north of the Tachen archipelago.
