Cap Canaveral readiness for America's first orbital attempt as Lt. Col. John Glenn prepares to circle the globe in the Mercury mission. Awaiting launch window between 6:30 and 11:30 a.m. CST with plans for three orbits if daylight allows, or fewer if recovery timing dictates.
Gov. Donald G. Nutter of Montana and eight others died when a twin engine C47 crashed near Wolf Creek while en route to Cut Bank. Among the dead were Nutter's executive secretary Dennis Gordon agriculture commissioner Edward Wren and crew members Cliff Hanson Joseph Devine and Chico Ballard. Lieutenant Governor Tim Babcock becomes acting governor.
The government moved to collect more than 3 million dollars in federal taxes from jailed industrialist Bernard Goldfine. Attorney General Kennedy announced a suit in U S District Court in Boston to recover taxes and to appoint receivers for three Goldfine firms. IRS agents also served liens on Goldfine's Chestnut Hill home and on multiple Mills and bank offices across New England.
A federal grand jury in New York has indicted John Calise, 51, operator of a New Rochelle blood bank, on charges of distributing state blood to hospitals. Prosecutors say the firm grossed about $500,000 a year and closed last September amid investigations into the case.
Racine police officer Eugene Kayde confronted two burglars at Badger Tool Works on the city’s West Side after finding a back door ajar. A shot narrowly missed him as the intruders fled toward a front door and disappeared into the night. The assailants were described as a six foot tall light man about 20 and a dark skinned man about 5 7, with one wearing a short burst of gunfire.

About 100 young Gizenga supporters chant anti imperialist slogans outside the United States Embassy and United Nations headquarters. Their protests hail Antoine Gizenga and call for Congo independence from imperial powers.

A 19 month old girl named Margaret Aplan died in Monroe after swallowing camphor balls found in a can at home. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Aplan.

Mayor Willis Anderson, a Sigma Chi, welcomes her with a key to the city as she arrives in Roanoke. She embarks on a weekend of parties, dances, a TV appearance, and a local tour in a dealer loaned luxury car.
