Wisconsin Civil Service Pay Hikes Approved by Board
The Wisconsin State Personnel Board on Friday night approved a $3,740,000 yearly pay increase plan for about 13,900 civil service workers, sending the proposal to the Legislature. The rises range from $10 to $40 monthly with a possible higher amount for lower paid workers, and include a new 22nd salary range for top psychiatrists. If enacted, the boosts would take effect July 1, 1957, funded partially from segregated funds and the state treasury.

Prison Escapee Captured After More Than 20 Years
George Dietsch 54 walked away from a Wisconsin prison farm in 1935 to attend his father's funeral in Oregon. He later changed his name to James Arthur West, lived in Minnesota and Iowa, worked on farms and as a mental hospital attendant, and hid his past until fingerprint checks led to his Jan. 8 arrest in Fort Dodge and custody in Independence. He waived extradition and reflected on his life before returning to Wisconsin to complete burglary sentences. He said he did not hurt anyone and paid for all he ate. He hopes to resume life in Iowa after release.
