March 19 Set For Trial of Contract Case
Washington Andrew J May former chairman of the House Military committee and the Garsson brothers pleaded innocent to charges of conspiring to defraud the government. Chief Justice Bolitha Laws set March 19 for trial. Also pleading were Henry and Murray Garsson and Joseph Freeman. The Garssons organized a wartime munitions combine that received more than 78 million dollars in war contracts. Freeman was their Washington representative. Indictment alleges May agreed to receive 536,634.07 and other sums to influence profitable contracts. The arraignment lasted under 15 minutes as all four entered not guilty pleas. May traveled overnight to appear. fingerprinting preceded bond as May asked for time to study the 16-page indictment.
