A record crop of Democratic presidential hopefuls emerged as Truman remained silent on plans. Reports say the list could reach 20 if he delays, with Kefauver of Tennessee and McMahon of Connecticut filing in Illinois for the April 8 primary.
County supervisors raised the annual incomes of 14 county officials by a total of 13 061.50 dollars and reviewed costs from the Edward Lahti inquest. The board approved raises for county and municipal judges and for highway department foremen while keeping some officials unchanged. Sullivan approves a $1,000 payment to each youth, with one third to their attorney and the rest held until age 21. City council voted the funds. The four alleged 22 hours of detention on March 20, 1949, tied to Milton Babich’s later murder conviction and life sentence at Waupun.
Four firemen were injured and several people were rescued with ladders in a downtown Indianapolis store fire. Heavy smoke and water caused extensive damage as three women were helped down ladders from a second story window.
Washington reports a renewed push for deep spending cuts as Congress debates President Truman’s peacetime budget of 85.4 billion dollars for the coming fiscal year. While leaders seek up to 14 billion in cuts to avoid a deficit, much outlay is already obligated and unlikely to be trimmed.

Ernest L. Whetzel Jr., a coast guard pay clerk, fled Camp Gordon Ga with payroll funds and a blonde waitress. He was seized in a night club near the station and $20,000 of the money recovered. He admitted leaving Camp Gordon Jan 3 with $30,000 of funds.
The French high command says Communist led Viet Minh troops pull back west and southeast of Hanoi under heavy fire from French and Vietnamese infantry armored units artillery and napalm bombing.
Gen Douglas A MacArthur asked that his name be withdrawn from the Illinois Republican presidential primary. State election officials said they would remove it once they receive a notarized request from him. The move follows a formal request and precedes any final action.
