Frigid air grips the Midwest with Milwaukee reporting subzero readings. Wisconsin towns such as Superior and Green Bay record deep freezes while a broad cold front extends toward the eastern half of the country with forecasts of continued subzero lows into Saturday.
Joseph T. Kluchesky former Milwaukee police chief will speak on Police Action in Racial and Minority Problems at a January 28 Enai Brrith dinner at Beth Hillel Temple. City and county officials will attend as Brotherhood Week prelude with Dr. Paul Herzog as chair and David Phillips as MC.
Madison Wisconsin report says Donald Bethke 24 Sauk City died when his car failed to negotiate a curve and struck a truck on State Highways 12 13.
At the United Nations a Russian delegate Andrei Gromyko delivered a lengthy lecture on armament reduction. When translator Robert Bernstein rendered the phrase as reduction of arguments the chamber burst into laughter. Gromyko praised Bernstein as the best translator.
United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis refused Interior Secretary Krug's invitation to join a coal industry advisory council. In a letter, Lewis called the idea anemic and futile and warned it would mirror Oil Board advisory efforts that harmed coal consumers.
Washington reports released in 1940 Soviet leaders discussed joining the German Italian Japanese axis for a four power map of Europe and Asia. Molotov allegedly pressed for Finland and Middle East influence with Dardanelles base and Batum and Baku sphere. Hitler rejected the proposals and prepared to strike Soviet Russia.
The coroner's inquest into Waldemar Meldahl's December 19 death was postponed to February 4 due to the absence of three witnesses. Witnesses present included Richard Miller and Robert Schoor. others, including Mrs Sonia Christensen, were delayed by trips or injuries. The inquiry resumes with expected attendance of the missing witnesses.
In Carlisle a would be burglar entered a home occupied by 11 state police officers, toppled dishes during entry and fled, leaving behind a jacket bearing a name and address. Police did not disclose the suspect’s name.
Milwaukee county CIO council voted to urge the national CIO Political Action Committee to oppose and repudiate Henry A. Wallace's third party candidacy at its Washington meeting tomorrow night.
The Rev. Armon Cheek of Mukwonago Universalist Unitarian church says his talk-back sermons draw limited early interest with five questions at first service since Dec 7. He reports 125 letters of response, mostly favorable, and notes invitations to speak in Racine and in two towns as interest grows.
A blast of 150 tons of anti tank mines at the Savanna depot near Savanna Illinois caused windows to fracture across northwestern Illinois southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa. No casualties were reported though a guard Jack Miller was nearby and uninjured. A huge fireball and thunderous blast were seen by witnesses in Sabula Iowa and similar shocks felt across the region.
President Truman rejected Hoover’s call to cut the Marshall plan funds. He endorsed Baruch’s defense alliance and wage stabilization while warning against drastic reductions. Donovan warned Russia’s subversive strategy, urging stronger Marshall plan controls. Hoover urged deep cuts and warned the plan could harm the U.S. economy.
James R. Law state highway commissioner said Wisconsin must furnish 200 to 300 engineers to secure 15 million dollars in federal highway funds over the next 18 months. He warned of losing aid if road plans are not quickly produced and noted private firms have not provided needed personnel. Plans were made with county officials to expedite the personnel request.
The Rocky Mountains west of Denver were scanned today for a Civil Aeronautics Administration plane missing after a flight from Denver to Grand Junction. The two engine C-47 reported severe turbulence and snow squalls at 14 500 feet before radio contact was lost twenty minutes after takeoff. Three men were aboard.
Vice Admiral Earle W. Mills said the 45 000 ton carrier Midway will be pulled from the Mediterranean for extensive alterations. The vessel has been the region’s most powerful warship amid tensions near Greece where the United States supports the Athens government against Communist aggression on the Soviet border.
Michael J. Isermann, 80, a Kenosha retail leader and civic figure, died after a two month illness at St. Catherine’s hospital. Founded Isermann Brothers. long service as company president. active in World War I and II efforts. director of Kenosha Chamber of Commerce. member of Elks and Knights of Columbus. Survived by three brothers and one sister.
Foreign Secretary Bevin told the House of Commons that Russia seeks to extend Communist control to western Europe. He warned that any power pursuing domination of Europe risks another war and urged caution to avoid sparks in Greece and Trieste while backing a four power approach in Germany.
A 15 minute flurry of fine particles fell over the Drewfield weather station and five minutes later small flakes drifted through midtown Tampa. Ground temperature registered 55 degrees as the city recorded its sixth snow in the weather records.
