Postal inspectors and police questioned two men about a tip that led to the recovery of 88500 in usable currency found beside a culvert in Frame Park near the city limits. The money was in two bank bags shipped to Chicago and missing since Thursday from a Soo Line platform.
Ten coast guardsmen were killed and 19 injured when the cutter Eastwind collided with the tanker Gulfstream off the New Jersey coast in thick fog. Rescue efforts followed as ships arrived, flames controlled by 10:10 a.m. The incident also sparked a separate investigation in Chicago over recovered money believed stolen.
Kenosha man John G. Wenman aged 31 of 4006 60th St was arrested in New Orleans on a federal post office robbery charge tied to the Salem Jan 10 holdup Sheriff Leonard J Jensen said Wenman also faced a Dec 31 tavern theft in Wilmot and a 1939 armed robbery case in Joliet His arrest followed investigations by Kenosha deputies and Milwaukee federal agents aided by St Louis police and New Orleans officers.
A early morning blaze in Sister Bay Wisconsin killed three children aged four three and nine. Fire Chief Melvin Schroeder rescued nine year old Diane Larson but could not save the two younger siblings as flames consumed the second floor.
