Kenosha shivered through a ninth day of near zero temperatures as a thaw loomed this weekend. Forecasters predicted readings of 15 to 20 Saturday and higher on Sunday, with zero again likely tonight. The stretch, tied to January records, affects schools, sports, and transport, as past January lows are reviewed.
The forecast calls for a zero to 10 above low tonight and a Saturday high of 15 to 20 with considerable cloud cover and snow. City noon readings were around 10 to 12 above, floors dipped to five below overnight, and Thursday reached 15/5 below with a trace of snow. Sunrise 7:15 am, sunset 4:49 pm.
A Wisconsin man and another Air Force crewman were killed when their B47 bomber crashed while landing at Briggs Air Force Base. First Lt. Russell E. Hanson of Cudahy and First Lt. Thomas H. Higgins of Wallach Lake were the two crewmen. Gordon Jordan of El Paso, a civilian base employee, was injured in the crash into the motor pool. Hanson and Higgins were assigned to the First Tow Target Squadron.
Moscow radio reported Thursday Soviet scientists intend to launch television equipped rockets to Mars Venus and the Moon to transmit pictures back to Earth.

A United Nations mission in Budapest reports Hungary faces severe food shortages and 12 percent unemployment by mid year. It calls for 440000 tons of foods, 14500 tons of seed, and 10150 tons of fertilizer, with Red Cross funds aiding hospitals and welfare programs.

At Camp Pendleton California during Operation Ski Jump Marine corps units conducted a Navy Marine test of atomic age tactics. Privates Pfe Matthew J. O'Neil 21 of Elgin IL and Cpl Benjamin F. Simpson 21 of Los Angeles died parachuting from Flying Boxcars to mark a landing zone for helicopters.
