Ada Benear 22 carries 16 month old Nancy Kay and a .22 pistol into a Houston liquor store to raise 53 dollars to post her husband James 27’s traffic fines. She is detained after police identify her at the city jail. She admits the hold up and is charged with robbery by firearms.
Portage County sheriff and coroner investigate after two small boys are found battered and frostbitten by a town road near a farmhouse. Doctors describe beating and thrown from a moving vehicle with head injuries and frostbite but note both are in serious but not critical condition.
President Eisenhower pledged full U S support to UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold in efforts to win release of 11 American airmen held by China. Officials hope Hammarskjold mission will lead to freedom and renewed negotiations despite stalled details.
Edward H. Wadewitz of Racine founder and longtime chairman of Western Printing and Lithographing Co. died early today at St. Mary’s hospital Rochester Minnesota after months of ill health. He led the company since 1907 and held posts with Walt Disney Productions S C Johnson Co Walker Manufacturing Co and the First National Bank. Survived by his widow Nettie a daughter and seven grandchildren. Burial at Mound cemetery followed funeral from First Evangelical United Brethren church Wade witz helped build.
A sudden thaw caused floods and avalanches in central Europe. In France rising rivers forced hundreds from valley floors, closed bridges, blocked roads, and threatened Seine river traffic from Paris to Le Havre as avalanches and thaw damage mounted.
Detective Elroy Beckman testified that Lt. David A. Taylor admitted tossing his 15 month old stepson Steven about 15 times and catching him as his head struck the floor causing a skull fracture. The preliminary hearing on fourth degree manslaughter was adjourned to Thursday.
Cecil Mayes said a 38 year old man in a two tone sedan gave him $300 after he hitchhiked near Chicago en route to Eau Claire Wisconsin. A lie detector confirmed his story but police held him on a disorderly conduct charge while the stranger kept the money.
Panamanian national assembly ordered the arrest and impeachment of President Jose Ramon Guizado after lawyer Ruben Miro confessed to assassinating President Jose Antonio Remon and implicated Guizado and his associate Rudolpho Saint Malo. The session denied Guizado leave of absence while declaring Miro the alleged mastermind.
The Organization of American States blamed Nicaragua for crossing the Costa Rican border with war materiel while not accusing its government of direct responsibility. The council urged decisive action to stop the arms flow and ordered observers to airports and transport routes. Costa Rica reported gains against the invaders as forces closed in on La Cruz.
Ricardo Arias Espinosa Panama’s third president in 13 days assumed office at 7 20 am after the assembly impeached and ousted Jose Ramon Guizado. A 42 year old golf enthusiast with a one handicap at Panama Golf Club he is educated in Virginia Georgetown and Santiago and was previously minister of agriculture labor and foreign affairs.
The weatherman says clear skies and colder air will replace clouds in Kenosha tonight with a low near 15. Sunday is forecast partly cloudy with a high of 25 to 30. Noon readings: 24 at American Motors 26 downtown 27 at the sewage treatment plant.
Sen. McCarthy handed Gen. Mark W. Clark a file of names and leads alleging communism and corruption inside the CIA. Clark, heading a six man Hoover Commission team, collected the materials in Washington and then returned to Charleston to oversee The Citadel.
Washington report to Congress states construction contracts for the St Lawrence Seaway will be awarded by September and the 105 million dollar project aims for completion by fall 1958. The study notes pending design and toll-rate decisions and expects revenue from tolls to retire the debt within 50 years.

A blond 11 month old boy named Gary stayed with Bernard and Doris Novitzke after a woman asked Doris to babysit. The woman fled with no return, prompting police interest. The Novitzkes, already with three children, wish to adopt Gary while detectives decide his future.
Mrs Elsie Proxmire 30 wife of Wisconsin Democrat William Proxmire has taken their two children and fled to Reno Nevada leaving Madison on December 28. Proxmire declines to comment and confirms selling his Blooming Grove eight room house saying it is too large. Proxmire's wife is a great granddaughter of the late William Rockefeller.
Peiping radio reports Secretary of State Dulles warned Japan about improving relations with Red China and the Soviet Union. The broadcast says Dulles told Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama that increasing trade with the Communist world would hinder U S aid plans for Japan.
Madison Wisconsin Gov Kohler announced Friday a fourth Governor's Conference on Children and Youth to be held here April 14 and 15. The event aims to discuss programs and policies affecting young people in the state.
