Felix Lamas, 27, driven by a pending divorce, killed his wife, two children and another couple in Hammond Indiana. He then set fire to the house and died by his own hand. Firemen and police found the bloodstained scene with a .22 pistol and a knife beside the victim, a telephone book opened to funeral homes.
Secretary of State Acheson ridiculed Senator Taft as a "distinguished statesman" for saying a small, affordable aid package could halt Communist expansion in Formosa. Taft urged naval measures to block a Communist invasion and reaffirmed Formosa as a place where minimal aid could prevent spread of communism.

The treasury plans electronic check writing at 200000 daily and a lockbox system for mass delivery. Checks range 60 cents to 528 dollars, with the largest going to a recipient under 40 insured for 10000 dollars. Debts owed to the government will be deducted before mailing. Each check bears Paul D. Banning’s signature and a note to invest in U S Savings Bonds.
