A thaw driven avalanche struck Ramahica and nearby ranches in northwestern Peru. Officials fear 3,000 to 4,000 people are dead as the snow and water swept through farm houses and forests in the Huascaran range.
Wisconsin’s 1961 legislature faced a vote to adjourn after 159 days in the Senate and 272 total days, aiming for a Dec. 10 return. Leaders consider recalls and continued unfinished business, with budget fights and reallocation proposals dominating, including wage and school aid measures.

In Carterville Illinois 11 miners trapped 168 feet underground were found dead after a blast. William Orlandi director of the Illinois Mines and Mineral Department said rescue teams located the bodies after hours of searching and the mine was ventilated. The shaft bottom was described as murky with smoke and debris and carbon monoxide present. Officials indicated the miners died instantly and the cause of the explosion was not yet determined. The rural mine lies 85 miles southeast of St Louis and compressed air was used for underground blasting.
Camden New Jersey Dr Albert L Weiner 44 osteopathic physician was sentenced to two to four years in prison and fined 12000 for manslaughter in hepatitis deaths of 12 patients. Terms run concurrently parole possible after eight months but not until the fine is paid. He may remain free on 7500 bail pending appeal.
Six people died in Veracruz state as a bitter Norther swept through the Gulf coast bringing freezing temperatures. The cold snap disrupted life across the region and authorities warned residents to seek shelter.
