Military chiefs from major Pacific powers opened talks in Washington on possible actions if China assaults French Indochina in what could become a new Korea crisis threatening Southeast Asia.
A wide sea air search was launched for the freighter Pennsylvania and 45 crew members after it sent a distress signal. Coast guard planes and ships scoured miles of the North Pacific, but no trace of the vessel or lifeboats was found amid heavy seas and snow squalls. A radar blip near the Cygnet III was the only clue. it yielded no further results. The search continued with cautious optimism as weather limited visibility.
Captain Kurt Carlson was awarded a silver medal by Lloyds for meritorious service related to the Flying Enterprise. The British insurer has issued the medal for meritorious service for 58 years, with only 416 awarded to date.
Green Bay man Jack Platkowski aged 47 died Thursday from injuries sustained last Saturday when he fell from a ladder at the Armour and Co plant. The incident occurred in Green Bay Wisconsin.
Weather prevailed with a mild but windy day in Wisconsin following a chilly night. Temperatures statewide were in the 20s with Lone Rock dipping to seven. Tonight remains cloudy and warmer. Harold Markert, 17, of West Allis, died after a rifle discharged while clearing snow from its barrel. The bullet entered his mouth and lodged in his neck. he died shortly after arriving at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
A 13 member check forgery ring led by a patient at Sunny Side sanatorium near Indianapolis forged payroll checks totaling at least $100,000 across 13 states over two years. Eight members have been arrested. five including leader Clyde Isenhour remain at large.
An Irish Airlines transport plane crashed in a windstorm near Carnarvon Wales killing 23 aboard including three Americans. The London to Dublin flight exploded after landing in a mountain bog as flames lit Moel Saibod. Passengers included W A Lynch and Thomas J Carroll of New York City. Carroll’s address and hoteldeparture details are noted.
In Green Bay a 22 year old prospective mother, Mrs. Odine Wolff, died after a collision between cars at a Green Bay intersection shortly after midnight. Her baby was born dead. She suffered a brain concussion and a broken arm. The crash involved her car, driven by her mother in law Mrs. E B Wolff, who also was in the other auto. The body died at Berlin hospital at 4 45 am.
Capt Kurt Carlsen amid cheering crowds in Falmouth after the Flying Enterprise sank 37 miles off the coast. The Danish-born American skipper, 37, apologized for not bringing his freighter ashore, recalling his two week stand to save the ship before it's loss.
The power commission ordered a further hearing here on January 30 over Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America proposed $2.4 million annual rate rise. The commission denied the company’s motions to lift a suspension and to dismiss the rate increase filing.

He described the wheel house door bursting under water pressure and the moment he and first mate Kenneth Dancy jumped into the sea, then swam to the Turmoil for rescue. Chicago reports Edward Smith, who has ulcers, is accused by his wife in a divorce suit of breaking 60 dishes more than 30 glasses and several windows to ease his ulcer attacks. Smith told Judge John T. Dempsey his method of easing tension was better than taking it out on his wife.
The Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena of Kenosha declare a new independent Papal institute after a Jan 2–6 general meeting. Pope Pius XII approved the move, with Archbishop Kiley and Apostolic Delegate Cicognani conveying blessing. Headquarters at St. Catherine's Convent in Kenosha.
A 72 year old Pulaski woman Mrs. Margaret Blahowiak was killed when her car collided with a hit and run truck on Highway 29 three miles west of Green Bay. Her son was driving and her husband and daughter were uninjured.
Washington and the War Production Administration announce steep reductions in steel, copper and aluminum for civilian use effective April 1. Public building and office projects slow to a near standstill while hospital and defense needs proceed. Home construction falls about 40 percent from 1951 levels.
Halsey McGovern of the American Transit association declined the Medal of Honor and Silver Star for his son’s Korea gallantry because he said President Truman is not worthy to confer the awards. The act marked the first time in history a recipient rejected the nation's highest military honor.
Sinking of the Flying Enterprise with its general cargo is estimated to cost American and British insurers about 1.4 million dollars. British underwriters were reported to hold a 40 percent interest.
