Gov. Thomson told a joint Wisconsin Legislature session that public education funding must rise beyond present levels to cope with growing school populations and costs. He urged reexamining funding while opposing a sales tax and outlined broader economic priorities.
Richmond Michigan police questioned a Lexington man after the husband of a Lonnie Barron fan club member was held in the murder of Barron known as the Mississippi Farm Boy. Barron, 24, was found near his four room house behind the barn dance hall he ran in Muttonville with fan letters piled nearby. State police say jealousy likely motivated the slaying.
President Eisenhower told Congress the nation enjoys an unprecedented peak in prosperity while warning that a strongly armed imperialistic dictatorship abroad threatens the free world. He urged allied resolve, reliable agreements, and peaceful control of missiles and space devices. He outlined limited domestic goals and called for civil rights action and robust funding for education and conservation.
The Very Rev Harold Rigney S V D survivor of over four years of imprisonment by Chinese Reds spoke at Kenosha High School to a large crowd. He described Communist court justice and Red strategy and urged aid for American POWs who made false confessions. He praised the American Red Cross.

A major January blizzard dumped five inches of snow on Kenosha last night, slowing traffic citywide with several property damage accidents. A Kenosha Motor Coach bus struck a downtown fire alarm box, triggering the alarm as it pulled away. Plowing began early and crews kept roads open, with downtown and uptown snow removal planned for tonight. Temperatures plunged to near zero with wind chills reaching 2 to 10 below. Snow also hit Racine six inches and other Wisconsin towns with lighter amounts.
The local forecast calls for fair and cold conditions tonight with a 2 to 10 below zero drop. Snow totaled five inches citywide. Morning readings showed 5 to 9 above at various sites and a 18 to 23 high expected Friday as winds pick up. Sunrise was 7 18 a.m. and sunset at 4 40 p.m.
Violence erupted in Montgomery as pre-dawn bombs damaged four Negro churches and the homes of two ministers. Revs Ralph D. Abernathy and Hugh J. Fields, attending a southwide conference in Atlanta, saw their homes and churches wrecked. The assaults followed a sixth gun blast on a Montgomery bus since integration by court order last month.
Norway's second largest liner the 17 500 ton Oslofjord tipped over in a Hoboken drydock and struck an adjoining dock. Eight crewmen were injured two hospitalized and 200 evacuated after being trapped for over an hour amid the crash and chaos.
Wilbur Schmit told the Wisconsin state Board of Public Welfare that the Wisconsin Sanatorium at Wales in Waukesha County is not fitting as a site for the State School for Boys. He said the campus is too small and many buildings are unusable, with insufficient room for 600 boys.
