A massive blaze at freight piers in Weehawken New Jersey sent smoke over the Hudson opposite Midtown Manhattan. The New York Central railroad pier 3 was gutted and pier 4 damaged. Losses run to at least 6 million with cargo at pier 3 estimated at 3 million. Five railroad workers were injured and crews battled burning creosoted pilings for hours.
Lawmakers consider a bill by Representative Smith of Wisconsin to authorize a memorial in Washington D C for the 32nd Infantry Division a Wisconsin National Guard unit.

RNC Chairman Reece urged Republicans to pursue a practical legislative program to fix Democrat era mess and boost prosperity. He warned against letting congressional actions become a prelude to 1948 presidential maneuvering. The Democratic National Committee countered, vowing accountability if Truman’s program is sabotaged.

President Truman named Francis B. Sayre as U N trustee council representative and advanced Warren R. Austin to United Nations Security Council ambassador. He also nominated Louis E. Denfeld to full admiral, O Max Gardner as ambassador to London, A L M Wiggins as under secretary of the treasury, and Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt to the U N Human Rights commission for a four year term.
Senator Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan pledged his party will back bipartisan foreign policy under General George C. Marshall, now secretary of state. The statement signals continued Republican backing for the Marshall plan era policy.
