In Kenosha a three part series notes hospitals face surging expenses since the 1940s. St Catherine's and Kenosha hospitals report doubled costs for food drugs and supplies while incomes lag. Rates for private and ward rooms have climbed, and admissions stay high with wait times.
Allan Jagodinski, 25, caught trying to lift a railroad detective's coat from a restaurant. In police court he was fined $10 and court costs for the attempted theft.
President Truman signed a duplicate anti inflation bill amid a White House mystery over the original. The act limits distillers grain use to 2.45 million bushels through January 31, 1948, amid a voluntary 60 day holiday and a government push to conserve grain for food. Secretary of Agriculture Anderson imposed rationing and reestablished wartime controls to curb high prices.
By mid summer Anderson's Park lagoon will be filled to five acres west of Twenty third avenue and south of Sixty ninth street. City officials consider turning the area into public park space or a subdivision for about 20 homes with a sewer line project potentially costing 50 000 to 75 000 dollars.
Henry Wallace resigns as editor of The New Republic Magazine to run for president in 1948. He will continue a weekly magazine page. Michael Straight becomes editor, with Wallace remaining as a writer.
Yeggs tried to crack a Magnolia Petroleum Co. safe in Enid Oklahoma over the weekend but failed. The safe jammed shut seven years ago and the company still offers a $12 reward to anyone who can open it.
Fire swept a two story farmhouse nine miles north of Black Creek killing Mrs Fern Pingel 31 and four of her six children aged 8 to 1 year. Father Ray Pingel saved two daughters by dropping them from an upstairs window as he was injured escaping.
Rep. Dingell proposes that Democratic leaders and administration officials draft a definite unified tax policy. He says when tax cuts come, first should be cost of living tax relief for low income individuals.
A fire in Brighton village, western Kenosha county, destroyed Wagner's Hall and the Underhill home, causing an estimated 6 000 to 8 000 dollar loss for the Wagners and 12 000 for the Underhills. Firefighters from Kansasville and neighboring departments battled windy, spreading flames for hours, saving nearby property and displacing a family as residents sought shelter with neighbors.
Henry Morgenthau Jr former secretary of the treasury said after a conference with President Truman that he will follow the late President Roosevelt and support Mr Truman for president in 1948.
The police and fire commission reduced seven applicants to three on Monday night. State Traffic Officer Haukedahl and Capt. Kirsch along with Deputy Schmitt will be interviewed next Monday before final action. Letters of support arrived for all three, and the commission deferred the decision a week to study qualifications. Inspector Emil Clausen has been acting chief since Sept. 27.

Walter F. Jaeckel aged 66 a retired fur merchant and native of New York died Monday in Santa Monica California.
King Michael of Romania abdicated today as Romania was proclaimed a Republic. He reportedly plans to leave Bucharest to marry Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma, a union Berlin observers call a blend of romance and Cold War diplomacy, with Groza’s government opposed to the match.
Gov. Oscar Rennebohm proclaimed a state of emergency over fuel oil in Wisconsin and appointed Anthony Mahler as fuel administrator. He urged strict conservation and cooperation among suppliers, manufacturers, railroads, truckers, and consumers as shortages loom.
Acting Chief Emil Clausen announced a City Bicycle Safety Patrol to address growing traffic safety issues as spring and summer bring more cyclists. The program is funded by the Optimist club with Sgt Ray Gleason leading. Junior Police will issue tickets and operate from police headquarters Bike Court each week.
Preliminary hearing for Mr. and Mrs. William Bentz of Route 3 Box 314 on charges of selling intoxicating beverages to minors. The case stems from statements by James Bennett Jr. and two injured youths after a crash near Rainbow Trail tavern on Highway 43. Bond set at $500 each, trial scheduled for present or next municipal court term.
Chester Dumond aged 42 Jefferson county agricultural agent died in a Watertown hospital after a heart attack suffered December 19. He had been a patient there since then.
