President Eisenhower visits Britain for an overnight stay and meets Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle. The Queen appears at the gates on television and is joined by Prince Philip as they escort the president from the airport road amid cheering crowds.
President Eisenhower drew a crowd of between 500000 and 1000000 along a 16 mile motor tour to the U S Embassy residence in London as Scotland Yard and city police called it the largest, most enthusiastic reception they had seen. Prime Minister Harold Macmillan quipped it was "rather good" and British papers hailed Ike's night with varied praise.
Soviet researchers say they near a system to deploy artificial comets. A gas cloud could reflect sunlight to signal rocket proximity to Mars about 50 million miles away, enabling visibility if radio links fail. The concept stems from Mechta tests that released sodium gas clouds.

Raymond Beare, 47, of rural Oneida, was struck and killed by a Green Bay and Western freight train near his Brown County home on Thursday. Authorities say he appeared to be sitting on the tracks at the time of the accident.
In western Colombia roving bandits killed 19 peasants on Wednesday, military officials said. The latest toll raises a week total to 37 dead in the rugged mountainous region.
