The Inter-American conference aggression committee unanimously approves extending the Monroe Doctrine security region to include a large portion of Antarctica and a large area of the Arctic, creating a zone from the North Pole to the South Pole.
A U S court opens the war crimes trial of 24 I G Farben directors in Nuernberg. Prosecutor Taylor says they fostered Hitler’s wars for profit and could repeat if given chance. Indictment accuses Farben of plunder, slave labor, and aiding conquest through the world’s largest chemical combine.
The McKinley district seeks a $1,000,000 building program to replace portables with a new 18 classroom elementary school at Thirty-second Avenue and Fifty-fifth Street. The plan includes a brick building with gym and community spaces, plus improvements at McKinley Junior High and Kenosha High.
Republican Charles E. Potter a 34-year-old legless veteran from Cheboygan won Michigan's Eleventh District seat in a special election over Democrat Harold D. Beaton. Potter secured 12,652 votes to 5,624 from 230 of 289 precincts, succeeding the late Fred A Bradley. He plans to move to Washington within two weeks to begin work for his district.
A 19 member House committee on foreign aid sails for Europe aboard the Queen Mary for 45 days to study U S agency roles in Europe’s economic rehabilitation. Acting chairman Rep. Christian A Herter says the mission will examine how to implement the Marshall plan across 15 countries.
The Wisconsin state emergency board released 103 500 to the board of normal school regents to hire 30 more teachers amid a 12 percent enrollment rise from 1946 47. It also granted 12 000 to Stout Institute to raise salaries and 5 300 to the public welfare department for pension grants, 2 250 for September relief, 4 000 to agriculture for tuberculosis indemnities, and 500 to Grand Army Home for veterans to pay insurance premiums. The board members are Gov. Oscar Rennebohm Senator George Hipke Julius Spearbraker and E C Giesel secretary.
The education ministry of the Russian republic announced that Latin will be taught in high schools again next year, ending the halt since the revolution.
President Truman bypassed opposition from John L. Lewis to name James Boyd as director of the Interior Department Bureau of Mines. Boyd becomes a recess appointee awaiting Senate confirmation after his nomination stalled earlier. Lewis, head of the United Mine Workers, labeled the move political and noted Boyd’s lack of coal mining experience.
Clinton Iowa report says Ezra Adams hit the family radio in a fit over a soap opera. Angelina Adams filed for divorce on grounds of cruelty, noting the two month marriage. Adams had been fined ten dollars plus costs after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace for the radio smashing act.
