Premier Mendes France moves to submit the European Defense Community treaty to the National Assembly without cabinet support. He warns the assembly could defeat ratification by about 30 votes if his modifications are not accepted, while allies hope for a path to approval despite France's stance.
Berlin Western newsmen were invited to a press conference in East Berlin with speculation the Communist hosts might reveal the West German parliamentarian who fled to the East last week. The invitation came from the committee for German unity, the group that hosted Otto John, the West German security chief who defected.
Wisconsin reports 163 polio cases statewide through last Friday this year, down from 216 at the same point the previous year. The state health board notes a drop of 53 cases year over year and a reduction of 35 cases from the prior week.
The White House said President Eisenhower was delighted by Adlai Stevenson’s message to French Prime Minister Mendes-France stating the European Defense Community was not a partisan issue in the United States. A New York real estate man testified before Senate investigators that Brooklyn cooperative apartments returned four million dollars to the builders who had invested fifteen thousand dollars. Lt General George E Stratemeyer testified that they were required to lose the Korean War.
A high ranked unnamed source says the United States would back the 7th fleet with all available military strength if Communist China attacked Formosa. He asserts the Communists would suffer a terrible beating and that all forces in position would assist the fleet.
At Valley Forge Army Hospital Phoenixville Pennsylvania the wedding of M Sgt William Hardin and Miss Isako Shirayama is in doubt due to medical and immigration hurdles. Hardin is treated for tuberculosis and cannot leave the ward while Isako faces a Washington immigration review and possible stay or return to Japan.
Senator Jackson of Washington urged the 84th Congress to take time to revise anti Communist laws after President Eisenhower signed a measure restricting the Communist party. Eisenhower said further study is needed to gauge impact on existing statutes and enforcement. A Communist spokesman warned of court challenges while noting the party will continue to operate legally.
A munition laden freight car caught fire in Frisco yards in Springfield causing 105 mm shells to explode over a wide area. One house destroyed, another damaged, one person injured. About 4 000 to 5 000 shells were in the car. Yardmen Summons and Gaston uncoupled the burning car to avert a bigger disaster. Officials blamed a hot box for the fire. Evacuation and street closures were ordered around the site.
Ray V. Gibbons of Anderson Indiana was elected supreme commander of the Loyal Order of Moose at the 66th international convention. The selection marks a leadership change announced in Chicago today.
A discarded cigarette caused a three hour blaze at Roosevelt Body Shop 2907 63rd St. Damage reached $10,000 to the shop and thousands to cars and a bus. No injuries reported though an employee fled after escaping flames. Fire crews used 1,600 ft of hose to battle the fast moving fire fed by stored paint.
Morning readings showed 84 at Nash Motors and 77 at noon with .30 inch rain. Highs reached 85 yesterday, night low 69, with 69 at the sewage plant and 77 downtown at noon. More showers and cooler air foreseen tonight, lows 64 to 70, Thursday high 74 to 78 with scattered thundershowers. Downtown pollen count 106 grains per cubic yard.
Miss Minnie Larsen, longtime Kenosha public schools music supervisor, was honored on Teacher Recognition Day at the State Fair with a meritorious service certificate signed by Gov Kohler. She began teaching in 1907, helped establish Lincoln High School music programs, organized a band and choirs, earned advanced degrees, and led Wisconsin music education with devotion.
Anti U S sentiment spiked as violence erupted in Rio de Janeiro after Getulio Vargas died and his body left for burial in the south. Troops fought crowds injuring dozens while U S diplomatic sites and businesses suffered damage.
Five year old Keith and four year old Marline told their mother Valerie Cook a new baby was coming. They returned with a five month old boy they had “kidnapped” from two miles away. Police found the missing infant and reunited him with his mother after a city-wide search.
