A strike called by Local 960 of the United Auto Workers idled 344 Macwhyte Company employees. Picket lines formed as third shift workers left after 18 negotiation sessions since June 4 failed to reach a settlement. Local 960's contract expired July 1 and the executive committee was empowered on July 11.
Cordial doughnuts and coffee were passed to strikers at Werner and Swan Laundry as the second day of the walkout began. Maurice Weber of Swan Laundry said the gesture shows no hard feelings with the employer. The dispute centers on seniority with a wage proposal of 7 cents now and 3 cents in six months versus a 10 cent increase asked by employees. Labor leaders and a federal conciliator from Chicago discussed next steps as orderly picketing was planned and work continued for some staff.
A special meeting of Local 960 members was called with a vote by secret ballot to decide about striking actions as the committee deems necessary.
President Eisenhower told Congress foreign military aid has been slashed to a dangerously low level risking free world strength.
