Tornado Rips Area North of Park Falls

A seven mile north of Park Falls region was hit by a tornado with a five mile path. Farms of Pritzl Treml Wardensky and Richter suffered severe damage including a cow barn collapse. Power and telephone lines failed over a twenty mile zone. Rhinelander area also faced outages and crop damage.

Drownings in Wisconsin Involve Nurse and Teen

Two drownings occur in Wisconsin on Monday. Eugene Fubrings a rural Stratford resident dies after stepping from a sand bar into Big Long Lake Washburn County. Karen Dunnigan a nurse from Black River Falls drowns at Warden's Resort while wading with Charlotte Farrell of La Crosse.

Keshena Teen Killed in One Car Wisconsin Crash

Phillis Kuester 18 of Keshena died from injuries after a car she drove left a country road south of Gresham. She was thrown from the vehicle onto a rock pile. The 1961 Wisconsin highway toll reached 516 with this crash.

Navy Extends Duty For 26,800 In Readiness Surge

Washington UPI reports the Navy will keep 26,800 sailors on active duty an extra six to twelve months starting next month as part of Kennedy's military buildup amid heightened Berlin tensions. The president met with advisers while the Air Force alerted reserves and the Army moved divisions toward combat readiness for possible deployment to Europe.

Eastern Air Lines Crew Returns Hijacked Liner From Cuba

An Eastern Air Lines crew flew to Havana to retrieve the hijacked $3.2 million airliner. The 10 man team followed a Cu ban plane to Key West and included the pilot co pilot and engineer who were aboard when a Miami Beach waiter forced the plane to Cuba on July 24. The Cubans then sent a patrol boat to Havana with a six person crew and three ferry men.
