A German coastal ship the Christel collided with a Soviet destroyer off Kiel in dense fog while shadowing a NATO naval maneuver. The Christel holed but afloat, the destroyer with two other warships seen heading north. German tugs reached the stricken vessel.
A two car collision at the Hy 50 41 intersection left Don Melvin Fried 21 Fountain City Wis dead and Arm hrt Helmuth Oswald 66 Milwaukee injured. Fried ran a red light east on Hy 50 colliding with Oswald’s northbound car causing Fried to be trapped and die instantly.
A Santa Fe passenger train collided with a work engine in Hardin Missouri about 50 miles east of Kansas City. The engineer was killed and two brakemen were injured and hospitalized. Fire engulfed the wreck as diesel oil spread over a street. passengers were unharmed.
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower has left Gettysburg for Denver because her mother Mrs. John S. Doud is ill.
A safety valve ruptured at the Johnson Wax Co. plant in Racine Wisconsin after a styrene gas tank overheated. A sprinkler system failure caused the tank to overheat. No injuries were reported as 50 firefighters cooled nearby tanks and mopped up the scene.
The Senate Banking Committee begins work on a new compromise housing bill with both parties predicting swift progress. Some members expect a Wednesday vote on sustaining President Eisenhower's veto of the $1.375 billion bill, clearing the way for a faster substitute.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved a temporary one-cent fuel tax increase to fund highway construction. The 16-9 vote backs raising the federal gas levy from 3 to 4 cents for 22 months starting Sept 1, with later diversion of auto and parts taxes to the highway fund.
Washington UPI report says Democratic National Chairman Paul M Butler will fly to Los Angeles to settle ticket distribution problems for the 1960 Democratic convention. In Little Rock Arkansas three boys were arrested at Central High School as a precautionary measure, with no incidents reported.
Washington The Senate Banking Committee today approved a substitute 1 050 000 000 housing bill with one major concession to objections raised by the administration against an earlier version. Miami A spokesman for anti Castro groups said a full scale counter revolutionary offensive is under way in central Cuba and the movement has decided to go for broke.
A fifth rocket in the Discoverer satellite series lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base California today. The vehicle used more powerful rocket fuel than earlier models, sending the satellite on its intended high altitude path.
Gunmen struck Havana as Fidel Castro led a counter uprising crackdown. Police clashed with anti Castro forces near embassies and the directorate of Castro's 26th of July Movement in central Havana. Seven men captured near Matanzas and hundreds held across Las Villas and other provinces amid detentions. Two American journalists remained in custody as officials reported no casualties.
Wisconsin senators Proxmire and Wiley divided on the omnibus housing bill. Proxmire supported overriding President Eisenhower's veto while Wiley voted to sustain it. The Senate fell nine votes short of the necessary margin.
The 39th Kenosha County Fair begins a four day run August 13 to 16 with judging of Junior and open class beef cattle swine and sheep clothing and home furnishings arts and crafts photography and more. Tonight the five finalists in the Fair Queen Contest will be introduced from the Free Act platform at 9 30. Friday features a busy schedule including poultry foods crops and flowers judging Children’s Parade 10 30 a m 4 H livestock sale drum and bugle corps contest and the coronation of 1959’s County Fair Queen at 9 30 p m. The drum and bugle corps lineup includes Cedarburg Thunderbolts Racine Kitties Madison Scouts Chicago Cavaliers Shoreliners and Vigilantes Kenosha. Nine bands compete Saturday culminating in the Big Parade at 10 30 a m with groups such as Mary D. Bradford Band Kenosha Rambler Recreation Band Kenosha and others.

Pensacola Florida reports the Navy plans to wed Miss Baker the space traveling monkey to a male companion as part of a scientific study. A specially prepared seven by five by seven and a half foot honeymoon space is being built with formica walls a tile floor air conditioning and special lighting. The goal is to test whether space radiation could cause reproductive abnormalities in the tiny squirrel monkey survivor of the May space flight.

Steven Rockefeller and his fiancée Anne Marie Rasmussen with Rasmussen’s family spent Monday night at a small vacation hotel in central Norway’s rugged mountains. The 23 year old son of New York’s governor and his fiancée traveled by car Sunday with Rasmussen’s family for a week’s holiday away from newsmen and photographers.
Madison The Legislature's Joint Finance Committee plans full-scale budget hearings around October 26, according to Assemblyman Fred Risser. He said the fall session starting November 3 would run until Christmas due to serious fiscal problems.
