The Soviet Union said Egyptian nationalization of the Suez Canal Co. is lawful and agreed to participate in a London conference on the canal. It urged postponement of the Aug 16 start to late August and asked for a larger invitation list beyond the 24 nations planned.
Gov. Kohler indicated he would testify next week at hearings on charges of unethical conduct against Assembly Speaker Mark Catlin. The Board of State Bar Commissioners is pursuing discipline and could suspend or disbar Catlin if convicted.
A two year old Chicago girl Karen Kerigan wandered from a visiting couple’s home and walked onto a Pewaukee pier where she fell into Pewaukee Lake. Her body was found in five feet of water.
The State Department defended its ban on newsmen traveling to Red China amid protests from newspaper and news agency executives. Officials said there is no change in policy and Secretary Dulles plans to stand by the decision despite requests for reversal. The issue arose after Communist China invited 15 American correspondents for a month starting late August.
