After a seven day walkout the 320 Local 960 UAW-CIO members ballot approved the company offer. The two year contract raises wages and improves health and life coverage, with shifts by seniority and new paid holidays. The strike began July 26 and the plant resumed activity with most departments open.
North Korean Army Sgt Yi Kyong Pin reportedly escaped a guard unit at Panmunjom and requested political asylum from American authorities. The sergeant, part of a Communist unit aiding the truce conference site security, sought asylum today.
In Sheboygan the 16 month Kohler strike ended in failure after a federal bargaining session. Local 833 demanded rehiring all 2 060 workers while Kohler offered to take back at most 450. A mass union meeting was set to reject the company proposal.
The United States plans a sodium vapor rocket 60 miles up over New Mexico to create a moonlike light at twilight. Dr Homer Newell of the Naval Research Laboratory and Prof D R Bates in London discuss timing and aims to study a sodium layer in the ionosphere and to inform the planned 200 to 300 mile high artificial satellite for 1957.
The National Industrial Conference Board reported that the cost of living in July was little changed from May and 0.1 percent below June 1954. The board’s all-items index for June was 100.2, compared with 100.3 a year earlier.
In East Peoria Illinois 18000 CIO United Auto Workers members ratified a new three year contract ending a three day strike at Caterpillar Tractor Co. The agreement covers wages benefits and work rules for the plant workforce.
Washington senator Kefauver charged that Edgar H. Dixon acted illegally in negotiating and signing the Dixon Yates power contract. Dixon replied that he did not think he acted illegally.
Paris conveyed a note to the German Embassy proposing that Chancellor Konrad Adenauer visit Moscow either late August or early September. In Washington, President Eisenhower presented the Medal of Freedom to Robert B. Anderson of Vernon Texas for exceptionally meritorious service advancing U S security as he retires as deputy secretary of defense.
Mississippi gubernatorial race narrows to a close with three front runners Paul B. Johnson Jr. Fielding Wright and J. P. Coleman contending for a runoff spot. Aug. 23 runoff likely. Ross Barnett trails in fourth and Mary Cain exits.
Cisco Grove California widow Mrs Albert Fine recalls marrying 17 and bearing a son while her first husband A2C Daniel Schmidt was missing in Korea. Now Schmidt, among 11 US airmen released by China after 37 months, returns as Fine and her new husband await her decision.
The Vatican City newspaper Osservatore Romano denounces Israel for planning a common grave for all 58 El Al disaster victims as blasphemous and inhuman. The Israeli rabbinate later announced it would allow mixed Jewish and non Jewish burials in the common grave.
Bandits linked to the outlawed Binh Xuyen gang set fire to Phuody refugee village in Indo China. The blaze left about 10,000 people without homes as authorities investigate the attack.
The weatherman warns of hot humid conditions through Thursday with many spots hitting 90 or more. Kenosha topped 94 downtown and at American Motors, 93 yesterday on the west side, and Madison logged its 23rd day with 90-plus temperatures.
Pfc. Lawrence P. Perona, 20, of Kenosha, stationed with the Army’s First Division, drowned near his base in Germany. Missing July 19, body found in a river. Born June 11, 1935 in Kenosha, he worked as a construction laborer before enlisting in 1953 and serving overseas since 1954. Survivors include his parents, siblings, and grandmothers.
The government rushed forage to Valdivia Chile to save 10000 cattle facing starvation after Rininahue Volcano ashes and lava destroyed farms. Thousands more cattle died from asphyxiation or poisoning from sulphuric gas from the crater.
Forecasters reported no relief in sight as a wide heat belt kept temperatures above normal into September. The U S Weather Bureau listed 100s across many regions with records in Chicago and New York. Iowa saw eight straight days above 100 and 36 heat deaths, while the Deep South lingered in the 70s.
Bulgaria announced that two of its fighter planes shot down an Israeli airliner last Wednesday near the Bulgarian Greek border after the craft veered off course. All 58 aboard were killed including 12 Americans. Bulgaria said it would locate and punish those responsible and had previously claimed Red antiaircraft guns downed the aircraft and offered partial payment for the airplane.
Premier Edgar Faure told President Rene Coty of a sudden invitation to Moscow and will seek formal cabinet approval for the mission. Sources say Faure and Foreign Minister Antoine Pinay plan to avoid specific negotiations during a visit to the Soviet capital likely this fall or winter.
Intense heat contributed to the death of 72 year old Hiram Lothe of Bristol. He was found in a sunlit farmyard after last seen at lunch time while tinkering with a combine. Coroner said heart attack was cause, heat a contributing factor. He lived at Herbert Lothe farm in Bristol for 22 months and worked 29 years at American Brass Company before retiring in April. He leaves two brothers, two sisters, a daughter and two grandchildren.
A 105 car freight train stalled with its caboose across the east bound Blue Mound Road in Waukesha, snarling traffic for three hours as cars backed up in both directions. Police from Wauwatosa and Elm Grove assisted with railroad officials blaming a brake failure.
Washington reportedly ended its seven month session with praise and good humor as President Eisenhower sent regards to a Democratic controlled Congress. Major bills on housing polio vaccine local transit strike defense production and a money bill to fund Congress passed the final day. Return to work set for January 3 with remaining controversial issues and proposals left for next year.
Congress passed and sent to President Eisenhower a bill authorizing government payments for free polio shots for about one third of the nation's eligible children and expectant mothers. The house and senate quickly approved an adjusted version from a conference committee.
House members capped the 1955 session with humor and boisterous antics as the chamber filled with songs, impressions, and a spontaneous chorus led by Rep. Priest. Senate remained quieter as Sen. Morse pressed a lengthy education aid speech while others departed.
