Congress struggles to adjourn before the July 31 deadline amid fights over public housing and pay raises. Three main items drive the stalemate: housing legislation, the Defense Production Act extension, and a 92 million dollar appropriations bill.
A bill totaling 16.6 million dollars for the Richard Bong jet air field at Kansasville passes Congress and goes to President Eisenhower for signature. Rep Lawrence Smith says the base will be a key interceptor field serving Chicago and Milwaukee and will become home of the jet wing from O’Hare Field. The base will be named for Maj Richard Bong of Poplar, with about 50 jet aircraft expected.
New contract negotiations resume between Chrysler Corp and the CIO United Auto Workers in Detroit this afternoon. Talks began June 27 with bargainers confident a new pact can be drawn up before the ex expires August 31.
Peiping announced the release of 11 American fliers as Washington and Peiping opened private talks in Geneva aimed at easing tensions. Wang Ping nan and A Alexis Johnson met at the Palace of Nations with agenda to repatriate civilians and resolve practical issues.
State audit figures show Kenosha with the fourth largest debt by population in the state. Total long term debt is 6 125 580 with 3 638 335 for schools and 2 207 000 for highways and bridges. per capita debt ranks 13th and debt per 1 000 property 24 68. Nowakowski, a seven year veteran and squad leader in the 61st Infantry Regiment, had a medical history including convulsive seizures. Surviving are his widow Ruth and daughter Donna Mar of Sparta.
President Eisenhower hailed the release of 11 U S airmen held in Communist China since 1953. The White House said the United States would aid reunion with families as Dag Hammarskjold and the UN pressed for their return. The fliers included Col John Knox Arnold Jr and Maj William H Baumer among others, with sentences ranging from 4 to 10 years.
The National Safety Council reported highways are safer than ever, noting a 2 percent rise in fatalities in the first half of 1955 versus 1954. Despite this, mileages climbed eight percent and the mileage death rate fell to 5.7 per 100 million miles, a record low for the period and seven percent below last year’s average.
