Paratroopers from the 11th and 82nd airborne divisions staged a mock invasion at Camp Mackall North Carolina to test air assault readiness. About 2,000 paratroopers jumped into an airhead area as nearly 70 transport planes led a coordinated airlift with jet escort.

Emanual G. Stauffacher aged 70, longtime Green County treasurer since 1928, died Thursday after a heart attack in his Monroe courthouse office. He collapsed in his office and died while being moved by ambulance to a hospital, after years as a farmer.
The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively cut the excise tax on night club checks from 20 to 10 percent. The prior decision left cabarets and roof gardens taxed at 20 percent. The reversal would reduce federal revenue by about 19 million dollars for the next fiscal year. The panel aims for a total federal excise tax cut exceeding 600 million dollars, with more large revenue items to come.

Thompson of Milwaukee predicts continued cold tonight and tomorrow with a chance of rain or snow in southern Wisconsin. Temperatures fall to the 30s last night and reach only 42 by noon. Land O Lakes reports 22 degrees, the coldest in the state.
A Wabash freight train at 70 miles an hour struck a Campus grammar school taxi carrying six grade school children and a driver. The crash killed all seven aboard. The taxi had served as an improvised school bus for rural students from the two-room Campus school.
Pudgy-faced Frank Erickson a top bookmaker clammed up before a commerce subcommittee refusing to discuss his gambling operations. He said questions violated his constitutional rights while senators criticized the stance as evasive. The hearing centers on a bill to ban interstate gambling information and a Kansas City leader’s possible murder tied to gambling openness.
