The Senate approved a long range housing bill 57 to 13 authorizing a vast slum clearance program and 810000 public housing units over six years. It also funds a 275 million farm housing program and a housing cost cutting research initiative. House fate uncertain as recess continues.
The Veterans Affairs committee in Madison Wisconsin approved the Laird Lenroot veterans housing bill sending it to the senate floor. Amendments would allocate 40 percent of the 16 million dollar housing fund to housing authorities and 60 percent to direct loans to veterans.
A blaze in Onalaska Wisconsin destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Ames. Six children aged six to 15 were among the eight family members left homeless. Only one quilt survived as firefighters determined the cause unknown. The family found temporary shelter in a garage.
John Gentzler Jr., a 31 year old Milwaukee bus driver, drowned when the motor boat he rode in capsized on Lake Okauchee near Oconomowoc Wisconsin. Two friends and a dog were aboard. companions were rescued while rescue attempts failed as the boat circled. The dog reached shore safely.
David Blackwell, 19, described as a tough kid with a petty theft record, was executed in Nevada for the murders of two Reno police officers. His last request was for a large chocolate milkshake as dawn arrived.
County board adjourned meeting approved standing committees and named Peter Harris to the highway committee after Friedl’s resignation. Harris elected permanent member on the second ballot 15 to 12. New committees include Agriculture and more, with members listed by supervisor. A special county fair committee was also appointed with Harris, Dassing and Rhode.
Federal court proceedings began against John W. Lubbers of Kenosha charging violations of civil air regulations. He allegedly failed to report landings at Carthage Missouri and Springfield Illinois on April 19 1947. A prior warning not to land at Kansas City Missouri due to low ceiling was cited after a flight from Albuquerque New Mexico. An extensive search and rescue was launched and Lubbers attributed the Carthage reporting failure to a telephone strike.
Nanking said to be cut off on both east and west as vast Communist forces push forward on broad fronts south of the Yangtze. Government defense ministry sources reported rapid advances tonight.
John M. Raymond, retired colonel and chairman of a board appointed by Gen. Lucius D. Clay, testified that Army prosecutors had little success obtaining confessions from German storm troopers during mock trials in the Malmedy massacre case.
President Truman urged Congress to adopt compulsory medical insurance as part of a national health program. He proposed a government funded system through special taxes, expansion of medical schools, hospital construction aid, and increased federal grants for disease control maternal and child health services. He argued voluntary plans are inadequate and defended doctor autonomy and patient choice.

Yesterday saw unseasonably high temps with 70s in central and southern areas. The high yesterday was 62 in Kenosha and noon today reached 65 downtown. About a quarter inch of rain fell last night.
Sturgis mayor William E Latta offers a 100 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of the person who stole a city parking meter. He notes motorists have deposited coins, but cannot assume they bought the meter.
Clyde Milton Johnson the FBI's top fugitive lay in critical condition at General Hospital after a running gun battle with three FBI agents on Monument Circle. He was wounded in the back as bullets struck two cars and the monument. Johnson had allegedly robbed a Memphis bank on Feb 8 and escaped from a Miami jail on March 1.
Milwaukee officials confirmed reports that A. O. Smith Corp has received an order valued at about 25 million dollars to supply pipe for a 1000 mile crude oil line from Texas to Ohio.
