About 232 inmates seized nine guards as hostages at Rahway State Prison farm dormitory in a riot linked to a separate rebellion at Trenton. Officials said hostages were unharmed and authorities planned to “sit it out.”
Assemblyman Harold Gade of Racine faces trial on embezzlement charges after a preliminary hearing. The treasurer of the Cooperative Credit Union for 12 years is free on bond and has not entered a plea. State banking commissioner Ross Richardson and Credit Union vice president Jack Harvey testified that Gade admitted wagering with some of the funds.
Leo V. Gordon of Floral Park Long Island was freed on a $500 bond after admitting he fractured a stranger's skull without reason. He resumed a principal role in the stage play Darkness at Noon which stars Edward G. Robinson.
One of China's leading educational institutions the American endowed Yenching University at Peiping was purged out of existence Thursday by decree of the Chinese Communists.
A North Continental airliner en route from New York to Los Angeles crashed in the Puente Hills near Whittier. About 28 aboard were reported. no confirmed survivors. The C 46 made its last contact at 3 33 a m PST. the wreckage was found 14 miles east of Los Angeles. The flight originated in New York and stopped at Philadelphia Kansas City Amarillo and Phoenix.
Edwin Herden a 58 year old Milwaukeean was charged with the hit and run death of Grace Chesebro 18 of Oshkosh who died after being struck on highway 110 near Lake View Memorial Park The defendant allegedly admitted striking a person and saw the body roll over the hood then left for his cottage at Winneconne before returning to Milwaukee and being arrested by Milwaukee police with a preliminary hearing set for May 8 in Municipal court
Five newspapermen were acquitted of defaming 16 public officials and three admitted gamblers in a probe of gambling. Judge Bernard Cocke ruled the decisions uphold press rights to criticize investigations. Also, Harriman was recommended by New York delegates for the Democratic presidential nomination at Chicago.
A charred infant boy was found in a burning rubbish heap at Green Bay city dump on the west side. Brown County Coroner Wayne C. Enderby will conduct an autopsy and police are testing the wrapping around the body. The rubbish load was burned at the dump this morning before reaching the site.
The navy called off today a search for a Corsair fighter plane that crashed into the ocean Tuesday near Atlantic City New Jersey, ending a missing aircraft case after no wreckage or survivors were found.
President Truman denounced a 6 billion defense cut as terribly dangerous and warned Congress that further slashing endangers planes tanks and guns. In a dedication speech for Amvets headquarters he urged veterans to help block the cuts saying national security funds are cut to the bone and more cuts create big holes in defense.
Secretary of Commerce Sawyer met separately with industry leaders and CIO President Philip Murray as rumors spread he planned a government imposed wage increase for 650,000 steel workers. Neither side commented after the discussions.
The government warned heavy snow packs on western mountains could trigger new floods in Idaho streams, the lower San Joaquin in California, and New Mexico's San Luis Valley. President Truman blamed delayed flood control plans, urging Pick-Sloan dam construction and announcing relief funds for Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
Police blamed Tottori's large fire on a short circuit caused by illegal tapping of electric wires. Three suspects were jailed. The 12 hour blaze damaged 5,000 homes and left 25,000 homes homeless and 120 injured with no fatalities.

Defense lawyers challenged former alderman Albert Krause who testified he took 3000 from Walter Sawyer to influence a street widening. Sawyer denied giving money or discussing the project. Prisoner Harold Nall testified about Krause’s conditional testimony and state’s evidence proceeds.
Police Chief Stanley G. Haukedahl suspended Det. Sgt. Franklin Hill for 15 days and Det. Melvin Knox for 10 days for conduct at the Dayton hotel on April 12. The action, effective midnight, followed a reported late Saturday argument. no pay during suspension. A written report will be submitted at a special meeting April 23. Patrolman Grant Tyler was promoted to sergeant.
The British press service reports Britain is considering recommending Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway to succeed Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. Ridgway currently leads United Nations forces in the Far East.
The U S weather bureau reports fair and unseasonably warm weather in Wisconsin with highs in the 60s and 70s and a low of 34 at Lone Rock. Kenosha, Lake Geneva and Madison tied for the day’s high at 74 while downtown Kenosha measured 68 at noon.
Wisconsin Governor Walter Kohler rebutted President Truman’s critique of midwestern governors over flood responses. He accused Truman and Wisconsin Democrats of political use of the disaster and urged that private utilities’ river harnessing show a need for limited big government. He noted Wisconsin river is controlled by 21 reservoirs with 16 billion cubic feet stored as of March, warning only a rare heavy rain could push it over banks.
Two Canadian navy planes crashed into the Atlantic about 70 miles off Nova Scotia during a training attack on the cruiser Quebec. Seven crew members aboard were missing, five officers and two seamen, with wreckage found but no sign of survivors.
General Ridgway paid tribute to Ernie Pyle as the most beloved World War II war correspondent. He issued a statement for Ie Shima memorial services noting Pyle’s death on April 18, 1945, from a Japanese sniper at the campaign site.

Clark Kalvelage of Janesville serves as temporary chairman as the group urges Fairchild the federal attorney for Wisconsin eastern district and former state attorney general to seek the Democratic nomination. Henry Reuss of Milwaukee is the only announced Democratic candidate in next fall's senatorial primary.
Wealthy Miami jeweler Daniel Richter paid 15 200 in jewels and 200 cash for his supposed kidnapped son in a staged extortion. Police say no kidnap occurred as a hoax orchestrated via calls to a school and hotel and a cab ride. authorities recovered the boy who remained safe.
