The Senate sent a compromise housing bill to the White House after quick approval by both chambers. It provides nearly 4 billion dollars in new insurance and loan authority and 150 million for direct veteran home loans. It removes Truman’s cooperative housing plan but offers incentives for veteran majority cooperatives.
Fairhaven Massachusetts. Walter Golas a 30 year old machinist bludgeoned his wife Barbara 27 and then asphyxiated himself along with his three children. Medical Examiner William Rosen ruled homicide and death by self act after autopsy on Mrs Golas.
In Modesto California a 19 percent ounce baby girl died yesterday 62 hours after a premature birth. The infant may be the smallest child ever born alive.
Union officials order a 2200 conductor strike across the United States and Canada for 6 p m CST on April 17. Under the national railway mediation act Truman may delay the action for 60 days by appointing a fact finding board.
Snow and rain battered Wisconsin on Easter Sunday causing slippery roads and slushy footing. One to two inches of snow fell across most of the state with freezing rain in the north overnight, followed by continued unsettled weather and cold with flurries forecast. Noon temperature hit 46 in downtown Kenosha with coldest readings around 24 at Superior and 28 at Eau Claire Park Falls and Wausau.
A 35 year old farmer Edward Doze killed his four year old son Ronald and himself with dynamite at a farm home near Mosinee Wisconsin. Doze detonated the explosives while his wife and four other children were in the barn tending a sick cow. The incident was reported by Watler Wolf acting coroner and a deputy sheriff.
Madison Wisconsin governor Rennebohm left for Florida to address a Hollywood druggists meeting and a Florida Wisconsin Alumni Association gathering in Miami. He will also take a brief vacation during the trip.
The Supreme Court refused to hear Lawson and Trumbo in their contempt convictions for refusing to reveal Communist party membership to the House Committee on American Activities. Justices ruled Congress may abridge free speech and silence when assessing threats to national welfare. The 6-2 decision leaves intact lower court rulings. Lawson and Trumbo face $1,000 fines and one year in jail.
Sen McCarthy says he will name a witness who will testify that Owen Lattimore was or is a communist. He plans to have the witness subpoenaed before the Senate foreign relations subcommittee as it probes charges McCarthy has raised about Communist influence in the State Department.
Lt T O Milton and seven naval reservists survived after ditching a Neptune PV-2 in Lake Michigan during a brutal ice storm. Residents of Benton Harbor and St Joseph aided in a 40 minute rescue as radar operator Norman Klonquist swam to shore for help. Dr Boughton Sowers and Malcolm Ross aided the crew as two men were brought ashore by canoe and others were ferried in. One radar operator sustained a minor hand cut.
President Truman arrived in Washington at 12 51 p m after a month of rest at Key West Florida. He was greeted by cabinet members and officials and traveled with his daughter Margaret and his staff aboard the air force Constellation Magic Carpet. The Independence remained in Santiago awaiting President Gonzalez of Chile for a state visit. A White House aide said a new atomic energy commission chairman appointment is expected within days.
The Chinese communist radio claimed today that widespread famine on the Chinese mainland had been checked.
Three people died in state accidents over the weekend with two traffic crashes and a train strike. Russell J. Grainer, 47, of Wauwatosa, died in a passing maneuver near Fond du Lac. Thepil Schlie, 33, of Menomonee Falls, died in a curve crash near Wauwatosa. Paul Frank, 63, of Fond du Lac, was found on railroad tracks after two girls playing volleyball witnessed the scene.
The Pickerel submarine of 1500 tons completed a 5200 mile undersea trek from Hong Kong to Honolulu in 21 days. Cmdr Paul Schratz, a 34 year old Annapolis graduate, led the test proving submerged navigation with Loran aid. The voyage lasted 505 hours and surfaced only at Pearl Harbor, marking a record distance for an American submarine.
A two story farm home near Geneseo in Henry county burned early Sunday killing Mrs Ward 32 and six of her seven children David 12 Patsy Ann 11 Larry 8 Connie 4 and Dennis 3 while father Glenn Ward 36 and one daughter Loretta 9 escaped. Neighbors phoned the Geneseo fire department but water was insufficient and the house burned to the ground.
Theodorus Daniel Gerber, 56, curator of the Bloemfontein Zoo in South Africa, died after a struggle with a wildebeest during last night’s incident.
