Sir Anthony Eden assumed office as Britain's 42nd prime minister and told Parliament that Sir Winston Churchill would remain the dominant figure in the House of Commons. He also indicated a fresh cabinet would be chosen by him.

Wisconsin state employment service reports jobless total declined by 10,700 in March to 64,200. The drop follows a month with improved hiring across sectors in Madison and statewide.

UW scientists Anthony Curreri and Charles Heidelberger report early human tests of OPSPA, a combined two-drug cancer treatment. The drug shows temporary tumor control in some patients but no cures yet and can damage bone marrow. Two patients remain alive beyond a year, while the therapies remain experimental.
Voters elected seven non incumbents to the 28 member county board, with Hubbard Nelson and Elfers upsetting incumbents. Kenneth Behm 24 of Beaver Dam died Tuesday from injuries suffered when his car struck a bridge abutment near here on March 13. He had been hospitalized since the accident.
IGGO and UVC dominated March 8 results with Petzke Morton Lake Fechner Wade Hastings Zuffa winning council and school board seats. Other IGGO losses included Rutkowski Berry as MNPL endorsed five winners. Voter turnout neared 60 percent with 17,955 to 18,950 votes in key contests.

Donald B. Ludwig, 20, of Kansasville Wisconsin, died when his car left state highway 11 near county trunks. The vehicle sheared a utility pole and hit a tree, likely due to high speed. Deputies report fatal head injuries.
Wisconsin voters approved a retirement age amendment requiring Supreme Court and Circuit Court judges to retire at 70, and backed a school district borrowing amendment. Retirement becomes mandatory for new cases, incumbent judges unaffected. Unofficial tallies from vast precincts show strong for votes and opposition. Justice Grover Broadfoot ran unopposed for a new 10 year term with substantial support.
Kenosha voters backed IGGO as most city offices went to its candidates. Earl Morton and Nicholas Wade won council seats, with Wade leading a one year term race by over 2,000. Judge M Eugene Baker led in city and county tallies for circuit court. Fluoridation foes lost while the nine member council proposal also failed. Rural turnout boosted county totals to 24,110. city turnout stood at 19,344.
Wisconsin voters reacted to fluoridation on Tuesday with four defeats and one narrow victory. Oconomowoc chose to continue fluoridation by a small margin. Rhinelander and Kenosha rejected fluoridation, while Monroe and Kiel also voted against it. City governance moves split, and Rhinelander unions and Endeavor wetlands decisions affected local plans.
