Flames Rage on Two Submarines at Mare Island
An explosion of 250 gallons of gasoline on a barge beside the Grampus and Pike at Mare Island Navy yard caused a fatality and eight injuries. Chief Machinist Teddy May died, while Lt. J. Townsend and Chief Gunners Wm Leahy and Morrin were hurt. Both submarines suffered severe fire with many men forced to jump overboard to escape.
