Monument to Maine and Her Dead Heroes Unveiled in New York
A grand Maine monument at Central Park’s Columbus Circle celebrates the 1898 sailors who died in Havana harbor. The bronze and marble sculpture, designed by Magonigle and Piccirilli, stands 57 feet high with a gilded bronze group of Columbia, three horse-drawn carriages, and inscriptions honoring the valiant seamen and the freemen who died in the war with Spain. The dedication united U S officials, Cuban representatives, and the Atlantic fleet in an unveiling on Memorial Day.
