Washington Rail Road Valuations Spark Tax Dodging Debate
The state railroad commission reports Washington rail road property valued at 186 million dollars for major lines with potential gains to 225 million including minor lines. Counties valued tracks and rolling stock at about 49.66 million, while the state board of equalization trimmed to 44.60 million, roughly 20 percent of the commission’s value. Critics argue the commission has the best data yet, citing census figures from 1904 to 1907 to challenge repeated reductions. The dispute centers on the adequacy of assessments and implications for tax revenues.
