Kennewick City Council Adopts New Speed Enforcement and Reviews Utilities

The Kennewick City Council adjourned session debated a telephone rental raise ordinance and reads on plumbing regulation. They revised a train speed enforcement measure to pursue civil action against the railroad. Fire apparatus shipments were rejected as nonconforming. H. H. Humphrey appointed City Attorney at $20 monthly. An Ashworth nozzle purchase and housing site reports were noted. Street grading in Garden Tracts was referred to committee.

Republicans choose Chicago for 1908 National Convention

The Republican National Convention will be held in Chicago on June 16 1908. Chicago won the bid over Kansas City and Denver on the first ballot with 31 votes to 13 for Kansas City. Seattle had scattered support. John C New of Indianapolis is national chairman and Elmer Dover secretary. The committee expects record attendance due to strong public interest.

Sulfites in Food Condemned After Wiley Experiments

Dr. Wiley and his Washington team fed twelve young men highly adulterated foods with sulfites for twenty days. The study links headaches and indigestion to sulfites and notes reduced blood cell counts and early kidney stress, concluding no evidence of benefits from sulfites in any amount.

North Bank Officials Named as Portland and Seattle Line Planned

Officially announced North Bank railroad leaders include President C M Levy General Superintendent F S Forrest and General Freight and Passenger Agent H M Adams with Ralph Jenkins as counsel James Kerr also named. Temporary Portland Seattle headquarters to open in Union Station within ten days. Portland and Seattle will operate independently from Northern Pacific and begin service January from Pasco to Vancouver. Extensions to Spokane and bridges over the Columbia and Willamette rivers are under construction with completion expected next year and full line including Astoria and Goldendale branches to open together.
