Turkey Show Rules Stir Debate Over Weights and Feathers

The article discusses why turkeys appear infrequently at exhibitions. It cites confinement stress, cage handling issues, and strict American Poultry Association rules on feather markings and weights as disqualifiers. Vetch Proves Valuable in Rudkin Pear Orchard

An Iowa garden tract notes two years of hairy vetch in the Rudkin pear orchard. Discing after harvest preserved mulch two inches deep, improving moisture retention and steadily liberating soil nitrogen. With limited water and low humus, vetch is highly recommended despite extra work.

Proper Silage Feeding Guidelines For Livestock Use

The guide advises adjusting silage portions to individual cows and avoiding leftover silage to prevent spoilage and milk taint. It warns silage is not ideal for horses, may loosen bowels in sheep if overfed, and favors pea or clover silage for sheep. It stresses balancing silage with bran or other protein-rich rations and combining with legume or mill feed as appropriate.

Jim Shiftless and His Pig in a Nasty Pen

Uncle Cornpatch quotes a neighbor who keeps a pig in an eight foot square pen with an old roof, a small trough, and a strong stench. He condemns the setup as wasteful and unprofitable, contrasting it with his own pasture hogs and sharing a blunt view on selling Jim Shiftless’s pig.

Beef Cows and Dairy Animals

A beef cow is described as square and blocky while a dairy cow is wedge shaped and angular. The beef cow stores nutrients in her body like a miser, whereas the dairy cow acts as a philanthropist giving away all that comes into her possession.

Silo Curbs Feed Needs With Acreage Advantage

An editorial argues the silo is superior as one acre of silage feeds three cows for six months, while six acres of traditional corn fodder are required for the same herd period, presenting a strong case for adopting silos.

Fine For the Cow Crop Types for Dairy Feed

The article discusses alfalfa and corn silage as the best crops for dairy cows, noting their high drought resistance and suitability for sustaining milk production. It emphasizes alfalfa and corn silage as key forage choices for cattle during dry periods.

Apples Sold at Auction Shape European Market

A letter from Herman Schocken of Hamburg discusses apple marketing in Europe. He notes auctions in Holland, Germany, and Denmark influence prices, with Italian growers sometimes earning 25 to 40 percent more by ensuring only perfect fruit is displayed and bid up. Washington and Winesaps feature prominently, with Germany seen as a key future market. The Australia apple season is brief, with April and May shipments.
