The United States Geological Survey reports 1905 anthracite output at 69,339,152 long tons valued at $141,879,000 with an average price of $2.25 per ton and 165,406 workers. Growth since 1890s is noted though strikes reduced output in 1902. 1904 and 1905 show gains despite labor unrest and stockpiling prior to 1906.
Washington May 15 The White House released letters from the president and Attorney General Moody clarifying that the president did not pledge to support a specific rate bill amendment. He said he did not dictate a program and that remarks to Senator Chandler and others varied only in emphasis. The document also cites unrelated House debate on DC interests and free passes for federal officials.
The president says he sought Chand ler as Tillman’s rep for the BIH and that Moody’s talks with Tillman and Bailey resembled other senators' discussions on proposed amendments. He notes it was impossible to use him as intermediary and urged others to contact Senator Allison, whose aims matched the president’s. Moody, with AG roots and Taft, agrees Allison changes nothing about court review. Moody’s letter recounts conferences and urges no final commitment to any phrasing, preserving the president’s liberty to adapt amendments in the public interest.
New York May 25 The annual dinner of the Union Theological seminary drew about 200 alumni at the Hotel St Denis. Rev Susan P Attesbury presided and speakers challenged traditional seminary views urging pursuit of truth and independent thought. Dr Hyde argued against indefensible traditions and Dr Knox praised the seminary for its age appropriate forward stance. Duluth Minnesota May 15 Captain Henry Larson commander of the lumber steamer Cretg died at Tacmgagehe Harbor after a long voyage. Reports say the crew gathered to honor the captain as news of his passing spread through the harbor.
