In Scranton on May 3 the tri district convention of the United Mine Workers opened with strong union support for a strike in the hard coal fields. President Mitchell and U S labor commissioner Dr Charles P Neill attended. Nell left for Washington claiming the meeting aimed at peace. Mount Carmel reports five carloads of non union miners from Clearfield region have arrived with more expected.
Six hundred structural iron workers walked out in Chicago on May 3 demanding 50 cents more per day and citing danger to life on high steel beams. The dispute threatens a broader walkout across building trades affecting 15 million dollars of projects, while 2,000 iron mothers join a closed shop protest.
Washington May 3 The president sent the nomination to the senate of Henry L Jones of Wisconsin as secretary of the legation at Santiago Chile.
Max Dittrich a Dresden leather worker recently arrested on murder suspicion has confessed to killing eight people over seven years. He admitted the crimes during questioning in Dresden Saxony on May 3.
Chicago May 3 scores show Pittsburg defeated Cincinnati 4 1 in the League section while Chicago edged St Louis 5 to 1 at St Louis. Boston beat New York ten innings 4 3. American results include Cleveland 2 over St Louis 1 and Detroit 5 over Chicago 2 with Boston 2 Washington 3 not in Boston. Miss Ethel Roller earned praise near Hagerstown Indiana for guiding a wild bay horse that bolted through Main Street, down hills and over rail tracks while two women rode in a trap. She steadied the frightened rider, calmed the horse, turned it aside, and brought the craft back to town with no injuries or damage.
