J B Barnhill and Dr McGrady argued socialism will fail due to human nature at Island Park Assembly. Barnhill pressed self interest and profit as natural, while McGrady urged cooperation and equality as essential for civilization.
W H Blodgett reports editor Rohrer, opposing Berne saloons, has faced severe retaliation including a home blast, wrecked office, slander, assault, and arrests. Pinkerton detectives identified likely conspirators to murder Rohrer and one offered $100 to have him killed.
The Electric Light committee reports on purchasing city current from Indiana Light and Power at three cents per kilowatt hour versus the city's municipal rate. The analysis notes a 35 percent loss allocation and calculates total annual costs, suggesting the outside supplier would need to drop to about .006169 per kW to avoid city losses, a unlikely outcome. The report invites citizen comment and possible wire additions to handle rising service demand.
One year after the Rome City excursion train wreck near the Union depot in Kendallville there is relief that no deaths or serious injuries occurred and few locals were aboard. The Rendel family reunion is in Rome City today and may be large if nearby towns send a proportional turnout.
Des Moines August 2 1900 The Republican state convention in Des Moines voted Cummins as nominee with 3, Perkins 603 and Rathbun 104 as others. Platform adopted Warren Garst W C Trayward B F Carroll etc listed. Cummins spoke of party supremacy Perkins said he belongs to common people.
The Idaho Republican convention backed Governor Frank Gooding for governor Burton L French for congress and Geo H Stewart for the Idaho Supreme Court. Resolutions support Roosevelt administration endorse protective tariffs urge anti trust laws ban railway passes for state officers and back a primary election eight hour mine shift limit and employer liability law.
The convention platform lauds Roosevelt and the Iowa delegation, praises Governor Cummins, and backs primaries and senator preferences. It denounces corporate influence and calls for tariffs that protect domestic industry, promote markets and fair wages, and oppose foreign control and domestic monopoly.
Watsy Dwyer of Tonopah and Jack O'Brien of Manhattan quarreled with a pledge to shoot when next they met. Dwyer, seeking O'Brien, encountered Albert Williams conductor NGC railroad and others. Dwyer fired three shots, killing Williams and wounding Dwyer. Dwyer later viewed Williams' body and collapsed, believing he had killed O'Brien.
A Cleveland syndicate of bankers and traction men plans a $3,000,000 project to build and equip the Chicago Lake Shore and South Bend Railway. The line aims to connect Chicago with New York via the Chicago South Bend electric, with operation hoped by September 1, 1908. Details of the financial plan remain undisclosed.

Charles McCay is under arrest in Clinton county jail for starting a fire that wiped out Kirklin’s business district. Detectives cite circumstantial evidence and a prior trade contract with a Jennings county man as motives, with McCay denying talks of the arrest.
Edward C. Reed, 37, a machinist, was shot and killed by Mrs. William d. Sincoke at her Richmond home. She claims self-defense after Reed assaulted her. three shots were fired, two hitting Reed. Authorities continue inquiry. no arrest reported as self-defense appears supported.
H L Buuck of Preble Indiana testified before the Indiana railroad commission that he could not secure freight cars from the Chicago and Erie railroad without paying conductors one dollar per car.
Terre Haute meat dealers were notified by Chicago packers of rising prices for pork and pork products, with mutton prices also increased.
An infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Anderson in Rushville Indiana died in suspected smothering at home on August 2. Authorities report the tragedy as a possible accidental death tied to the household.
Andrew Sellars suffered a severe hand injury at Cline Brothers Lumber Co when a wrench slipped while knives were adjusted and his hand struck a rapidly turning knife. Doctors Goodwin Williams and Teal amputated the hand saving the index finger and thumb. He had worked there three years on Sheridan street.

Farmers and Merchants Trust Co. opens a new bank in Ligonier today led by Mayor Fred Green as president and John A. L. Henry as cashier. Mr and Mrs Frank Hofer, now farming near Hudson, shopped here and consider returning to Kendallville to live.
