Captain Charles Taylor aged 74, Civil War veteran and advocate of a Colored home guard for Leavenworth, presided over the newly organized guard formed last night at Benevolent hall on Cherokee street. In eight minutes Dr. C. M. Moaten was named surgeon, Ralph Rowlett the noted Colored poet was named ag receorder and Joseph Henderson appointed treasurer.
His Eminence James Cardinal Gibbons warmly welcomed Dr. George W. Cabaniss at his Baltimore home on September 5 for a lengthy interview on the Camp for training colored officers at Fort Des Moines Iowa and other race matters. Dr. Cabaniss then returned to Iowa last week.
By Chas. A. Starks the piece questions how far authorities will use Black patriotism amid war. It argues the Negro seeks justice and equality, cites 600,000 Black troops at Verdun, and urges pride, duty, and a demand for full citizenship while warning against anti Negro hostility and limited opportunities at home.

In St Louis on September 20 a mass parade drew over two thousand uniformed men and many bands to celebrate the corner stone laying of the Pine Street Y M C A for Colored men. Leaders include Grand Lodge Masons, civic clubs, and religious bodies, with speeches by Nelson C. Crews and others.
Lawrence Scanlon of Cedarhurst, serving with aviation forces in France, fell 500 feet after losing control of his aircraft. He crashed through a bakery roof but escaped unharmed as the machine was demolished. he had previously sought a chance with American fliers and qualified in France despite his color.
East St. Louis Sept 10 Mayor Fred W Mollman and his secretary Maurice Ahearn, among 38 indicted in connection with recent race riots, were arrested in the mayor's office. Mollman posted a 3000 dollar bond to answer the conspiracy charge.
