Negro National Educational Congress Opens in Washington
About 150 prominent African American educators gathered Wednesday at Metropolitan AME Church for the 25th annual Negro National Educational Congress opening session. Delegates from across the country discuss educational uplift, race power, and potential political representation, with speeches by U.S. and local leaders, and plans to publish Black literature in libraries nationwide.

Brave Officer Shot in Capital City Encounter
Police Officer Walter Howard and Officer T. W. Wright were shot and seriously wounded by two ex-convict burglars, William Hammond and Ed Turer. Howard, off duty at home, bravely engaged, was shot in chest and jaw but kept firing until help arrived. He is recovering, expected to be out soon, and a push for his sergeant rank follows. Col George E Thompson, a noted Kansas City figure and K of P leader, died suddenly on his porch, born 1866 in Grand Rapids.

Hurrah Ebenezer Church Choir Carnival Opens at Lincoln Park
The Hurrah Ebenezer Church Choir Carnival and Contest runs September 4 to 8 at Lincoln Electric Park. It claims to be the West’s greatest concert event with all Negro choirs within 75 miles invited. $200 in prizes is offered for the top five choirs plus a $10 solo prize each evening. Entrants include Atchison, Leavenworth, St. Joseph, Topeka, Argentine, Kansas City Kan, Independence, and Kansas City Mo. Rev. W. C. Williams and Prof. B. J. Knox manage the event.
