A strongly worded editorial denounces Kansas City Negro Democrats for voter intimidation and violence at polling places. The piece portrays white men as less culpable than Black voters and calls for gubernatorial action, labeling the group a protect crimi nals and a menace to society.
Poem by Edwin Garnet Riley asks when oppressive hate will end and truth begin to empower every heart. It envisions a world freed from caste and clan divides, where all humanity shares in a just and luminous future.
A chaotic Kansaga City election report details Democratic gunmen slugging and intimidating Republican voters, with police and officials seen as absent or passive. Republican judges flee booths while challengers and workers are assaulted, lines lengthen and intimidation extends across multiple wards, as Democratic areas see smoother voting conditions.
In the North End precincts Democratic workers and judges carried pistols or bludgeons. Election Commissioners Crittenden and Oppenstein disarmed two Democratic judges Henry St. Clair and Thomas W. O Bannon at the Fourth precinct. Oppenstein ordered arrest, but the policeman refused to enter the booth, citing illegality.
Clangs of hoodlums in cars roared through Eighth Ninth and Eleventh wards firing pistols and intimidating Black voters. W M Greene was shot in the left shoulder at Twenty sixth Street and Woodland Avenue. E J Bedford, another Black voter, was knocked unconscious by a club blow. Hoodlums targeted Republicans while Harding badge wearers were assaulted after refusing a challenge to remove their badges.
Throughout the day Republican workers entered headquarters with black eyes swollen faces and cuts from alleged Democratic assaults. Attorney H C Doyle of 3645 Central Street and Thomas Jackson of 2618 Euclid Avenue were arrested after intervening in a fight between Jackson and a Democratic worker. Doyle and Jackson released on $101 bonds.
In Missouri a sweeping Republican triumph dominates the election with a 35 vote majority. The party wins the state senate for the first time, captures 11 of 16 Congress seats, and carries major cities including St. Louis Kansas City and St. Joseph. Statewide ticket offices go Republican by large margins and nominations highlight Henry M. Beardsley as a party favorite. Also announced is the engagement of Anna Loretta Smith to Clyde Oscar Williams with a December wedding planned.
A gun squad in a large black touring car fired into the air and assaulted voters in the eleventh ward and near Twenty-fourth and Olive streets. William W. Green, a 42 year old Black resident of 2404 Woodland Avenue, was shot in the left shoulder as the car sped away. Green, a disabled veteran, was treated at home. doctors deem his wound not dangerous. Police could not identify the assailants.
The Community Service Urban League board, chaired by Prof. J. KR. BE. Lee, met on November 1 to name Mr. F. T. Lane as Executive Secretary. Lane, trained at Morehouse College and Chicago University, previously led Urban League and YMCA work in Chicago and Wabash Avenue M. OC. A. He joins from Chicago Urban League before relocating to Kansas City. The league maintains offices at the Community Club on Eighteenth and Vine streets. The notice ends with a contrast to meat shopping at National Packing House Market 658 Walnut.
Mrs Mildred Elders formerly of Carrollton Missouri died at Noyes Hospital on Sunday October 31 She belonged to the Abyssinian Tabernacle and her body was prepared at Ramsey Undertaking Parlor and shipped to Carrollton for burial She leaves a mother aged 106 a daughter and many friends plus a note of community notices from Topeka and Bartlett High town life.
