A Jamestown Va production presents a drama set in 17th century colonial arrival of Africans as slaves. It portrays brutal overseer lashings, slave labor in cane and cotton, and a faith for solace as a central theme with recurring chorus lines and prophetic clock imagery.
The passage argues slaves were invaluable laborers key to Southern wealth and industry. It describes the Atlantic slave trade, the entrenchment of slavery in Southern life, and the denial of basic rights, portraying slaves as property and cattle, with moral decay among whites. The piece notes the origin of what it calls original American music from slave songs.
Avery Chapel hosted a packed farewell reception for Rev. and Mrs. T. H. Wiseman as they transfer to the North Carolina Conference under Bishop Chappelle. Notables on the platform included Bishop J. Bishop Niles of Cincinnati head of the Ancient African Methodist Episcopal Church escaped a razor attack by Brother Davis, an offended preacher he had removed. Davis rushed him with a razor but the Bishop reacted with extraordinary speed, saving his life.
St Louis lights up with a Mr and Mrs Aaron E Malone tribute concert by Simms Concert Band of forty. Dr William Knight presents Mrs Malone with an engraved gold star of success for her contributions to St Louis and the race. First in a series of social affairs honoring the Malones.
A woman accused A. C. Mayo alias Judge Mayo of Gary Indiana of fleecing her of more than $500. The Chicago Defender consulted its attorneys Ellis and Westbrooks who investigated and Mayo was indicted in Cook County Criminal Court for the return of the money after a full explanation.
Mayo faces a Chicago Municipal Court complaint charging him with obtaining 2040 from Edward Kennedy and wife of 4594 St Louis Avenue by the confidence game. Arrested Saturday night, extradition papers sent to bring him back to Chicago to answer the offense.
Warren Logan, acting principal at Tuskegee Institute, announced plans to launch the Reserve Officers' Training Corps in February. The program opens to all male students over fourteen, with government furnishing full uniforms and appointing a regular Army officer to run drills. Top students in military science may be recommended for further training toward a commission in the Officers' Reserve.
A benefit entertainment at Convention Hall last Wednesday for the Young Women's Christian Association drew nearly three thousand despite streetcar issues. It reported total paid memberships and featured a strong program by Taylor, White, the Choral Club, and others with solos, orchestral works, and songs.
A call to join the National Negro Constitutional Conservation League of America and support Kansas Defense Society efforts. It advocates equal rights for African Americans in education housing employment and voting, condemns mob violence, and seeks release or retrial for imprisoned soldiers. Also news comes that Frank Peck Jackson, a town figure, died in France.
Sergt Burrell H Neely of the 806 Pioneer Infantry writes of longing to return and walk down 18th street, praising Kansas City as the place that feels like home. Reports from the Ninety second trained at Funston and echoes from the old Eighth Regiment and Fifteenth of New York. Dr Peck has returned from Topeka and notes the legislature favorable to his recommendations.
Miss Brady of New York representing the National YWCA gave an inspiring lecture to our Y. W. C. A. group last week. Lieutenant Brooks from Camp Funston Kansas spoke to students in chapel. Sergeant Harold Bentley, training at Camp Pike, has returned and registered as a student. Prof. Clark, former commandant, spoke of Y work in France and showed battlefield souvenirs.
