More than 1,700 people witnessed a well rendered drama at Auditorium Theater last Friday. Receipts totaled 748.68 dollars. The production “Under the Shadow of” featured Ebenezer Stars and Robert Belknap in leading roles with Dr C Lloyd Peebles drawing praise for his performance and presence.
Seventeen hundred patrons attended a play staged by Ebenezer Church members. Mrs. W T Osborne directed a capable cast with dramatic skill and elaborate costumes. The performance drew praise for actors including Addison Gilliam J F Collins and Ethelphores. A charity benefit for the Community Center was announced with plans to repeat the show.
St Monica’s Altar Society praises Judge Mike Bulger for aiding the church and County Home for the aged and indigent Negroes with a Victrola. The group lists officers and members including Mrs Brook Williams chair, Mrs Therence, Mrs Jenle Davis, Mrs Eugenia Washington, Mrs T C Brown, Mr Philip Wallar, and Dr Howard M. Smith Supt. of the Home and staff led by Matron Frances Jackson.

Dr I M Horton prominent eye specialist in Dallas and his wife were wounded in a shooting near midnight Wednesday. Horton was taken to Parkland Hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the left side. His wife received a flesh wound to the right temple but survived. The shooter, Prof J W Ray, declined to comment beyond wishing publicity for the affair. Ray and Horton know each other through local Dallas circles. Horton had practiced in Dallas for several months and boarded with the Ray family at 501 Roseland avenue. The Rays are respected Dallas citizens with Ray having taught in Dallas schools for about thirty years. Horton is reported to have taught in Kansas City prior to his Dallas arrival and had been employed by Titche-Goettinger Co. Dallas Express.
Herbert Johnson, a Black businessman, left the beaten path to run an up-to-date floral shop at 180 East 18th Street. His work decorates funerals and events, reflecting careful attention to detail and customer relations. He operates with Bellphone Clifton 2043 and plans time for friends.
The Beau Brummels social on February 19 drew 126 attendees with a full program and refreshments. The Corn-Willie Banquet and Wayne Miner Post No 140 A L observed a lively gathering with an old army trumpet call, doughnuts, corn-willie, and black Java. Memorial services were held to honor relatives of those who served in the French War diploma.

Parishes in the South number 46 with 35 missions. St Josephs College Montgomery Ala trains leaders for missionary and educational work. Orphanages, schools staffed by Sisters, and industrial programs empower Negro youths. a native clergy is seen as eventual. Knights of Peter Claver highlighted as a parallel to Knights of Columbus for Black Catholics.
The Poro Club welcomed Mrs Alphin who urged members to beautify lives and souls along with their hair. Mrs Duncan performed musically and Octava Johnson received her diploma. The next meeting is Monday March 1 with Mrs Hattie Washington and a $40 Washington boulevant in Kansas City Kas.

Austin Lewis aged 79 died at 1215 Highland avenue last Friday and was buried Monday at Allen Chapel under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. A Civil War veteran of the 53rd Regiment U S Vols, he lived in Platte City for many years, raising eight children, two of whom died. Surviving children include Mrs Trille Rummons, Mrs Minnie Robinson, Edward Lewis, W T Lewis, Charles A Lewis, and George Lewis. He was a charter member of William Henry Lodge A F and A M at Platte City and joined Allen Chapel in 1900. The funeral sermon was by Rev J B Nance with assistance from Rev Prince and Rev John Goins. Masonic services by W C Houston. Interment in Highland cemetery. The family, active in Allen Chapel, is widely prominent. Mrs Lewis formerly headed the Senior Stewardess Board. The Sun extends deepest sympathy.
