Washington Sept 23 The Senate investigating committee heard that William B. Shearer was hired to report on the naval conference but no written contract existed and payment was in cash. S Wakeman of Bethlehem Shipbuilding testified the engagement was verbal and that Shearer was to observe and report on Geneva talks.
The Associated Press reports in Vera Cruz state and Cordoba city that clashes with stones and motor crowds injured several people though no fatalities. Armed men attacked capital booth areas and numerous polling sites remain closed amid rival political groups.
Florence Trumbull and John Coolidge nearly faced arrest while speeding to a reception in New Britain. A motorcycle officer chased them for a half mile before stopping the pair. John, driving, produced his license and revealed his identity as the ex-President's son. The officer let them go.
The federal hunting season opens midnight tonight and runs to January 27, overlapping with the state season from September 15 to April 30. Lieuts John Donaldson and Luther Johnson escaped death when their plane crashed after they parachuted to safety.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh's Sikorsky amphibian landed at Georce Town British Guiana at 11 25 AM local. A companion Pan American Airways plane left Port of Spain at 7 16 AM heading toward Paramaribo. Lindbergh sent radio updates from the Central Pan American airport as the two planes followed a 5000 foot course along a clear coast past Princesstown and toward Georgetown.
William L. Brock, 29, an ex convict, was returned to Kansas City after police say he robbed Joe Lucky, driver for Louis Auto Livery, and stole a cab to visit a rich widow in Fort Worth. Brock admitted the thefts totaling $8.50 and claimed motive was funds for courting agencies. He previously served five years for highway robbery and motor car theft. Brock to face prosecutor tomorrow.
Government finances show a surplus of 29,337,290 for the first time this fiscal year based on figures issued by the treasury department. Total income since July 1 reached 921,237,506 while expenditures totaled 891,900,216, a contrast to last year’s deficit.

The International Air Circus and Pilots Reunion opened at Fairfax Airport with rivalries between the radio wizard Bernays Johnson and the robotic Televox. Televox, once ill from a coil failure, was restored by Dr. J. M. Barnett in a dramatic operation and prepared to perform tricks as the show opened at 1 pm and continued nightly.
Sprinakevo Missouri September 23 Dr E C Cantrell 31 died when his car hit a moving freight train on the east edge of Springfield. Paul Shouse 28 of Greenfield died an hour after the crash and Louis Marshall Is Home New York Sept 23 body of Louis Marshall attorney and philanthropist who died in Zurich arrived for burial in New York.
At Fairfax Airport Kansas City spectators and visiting aviators witnessed a standout demonstration by Preddie Lund chief test pilot for the Waco Aircraft Corporation. His sky lesson topped the day’s racing, formations and parachute drops and will be repeated throughout the circus finish next Sunday night.
The Kansas City Radio and Electrical Show at Convention hall runs daily from 1 to 10 pm all week with 50 cent adult and 25 cent child admission. Bernays Johnson, dubbed electrical wizard, will perform daily.
