L L Heines, 57, operator of a music box shop in Joplin, was beaten and bound with copper wire by three armed men believed to be slot machine ring members from Jackson or Buchanan counties. They accused him of knowing about a $16,000 slot machine hijacking and fled after about an hour. a Negro porter freed him. Heines suffered severe injuries but was not fatally hurt.
Nathan Kellebrew, 32, of Little Rock Arkansas, drove a large East Texas motor freight truck into a sharp turn to avoid a car with a woman and three children, causing a rollover at an intersection in Polar Bluff Missouri. All involved were unharmed in the June 19 incident.
Frank J. Ryan, 80, Kansas secretary of state, stood at his desk as a deputy sheriff read a complaint alleging incompetence. Ryan accepted service and indicated the next move rests with him, with options including a jury trial or probate judge Walter Stumbo naming a medical commission of physicians.

Washington June 19 AP The Senate passed a compromise draft bill by voice vote after an all night filibuster. The measure would draft men aged 19 through 25 for twenty one months starting ninety days after final enactment. The vote followed fast-moving clashes over whether the bill had passed and who could speak, with Ives initially ruling passage and then reversing. Taylor of Idaho and Langer of North Dakota led the filibuster, which stretched from 2:37 p.m. to 7:39 a.m., as senators shouted and napped on cloakroom cots.
A New York housewife Frances Swadesh expressed deep regret after her telegram halted Senator Glen Taylor’s filibuster on the draft bill. She said she intended peace and that citizens can congratulate themselves on having one honest senator, describing her motive as simple.

Condition of explosion victim Mrs George Helmers, 1235 West Seventy Fifth Street, improved today and is no longer in critical condition, hospital attendants said. Two other victims, Mrs George H Helmers and Miss Alta Ellis, died from burns in the blast at the home on June 10.
A Strasa wharf collapsed sending about thirty people into the water, drowning twelve, as reported by Ansa. The incident occurred in Rome on June 19, with the AP confirming the casualty toll of twelve from the disaster.

Philadelphia June 19 AP A Republican platform is in drafting stages as a T-member subcommittee under Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr begins assembling proposals. The full resolutions committee will review the draft before it goes to the convention next week. Members include Wilber M.
