Dr John C. Weaver of Ohio State University will succeed Dr Elmer Ellis as president of the school in September. Ellis steps down after a long tenure and Weaver will assume leadership at the start of the new academic year, guiding policy and vision.
Dr. John C. Weaver 50, Ohio State vice president for academic affairs, will be MU’s 14th president when Dr. Elmer Ellis retires in September. The board of curators unanimously approved his appointment after a nine month search screening 300 nominees and interviewing over 100. Weaver has Missouri ties dating to the 1930s and prior administrative experience at Kansas State and Nebraska.
The Greater Kansas City Sports Commission selects 157 civic leaders to form a charter membership. They meet at 8:30 AM Saturday at Plaza III to commit to projects supporting the Chiefs and Athletics and plan a sports complex. Ticket drives for both teams are under way with hopes for higher season ticket sales.
Ross Joseph Strada, 24, manager of Antonios Pizzeria on Main, was acquitted by Magistrate Bernard W. Gnefkow of common assault stemming from an altercation at Mel's Pompeii room next door. Witnesses conflicted as to provocation. injured man Florschutz testified Strada attacked after refusals to back off. Martin corroborated. Strada is on parole for three years from a prior motor vehicle without owner's consent case.

A three-judge federal panel ruled Tennessee’s 1965 anti nudism law unconstitutional. The decision said the ban on nudist camps was too vague to meet due process protections of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Carl Alexander, 56, of Santa Ana California, a U S adviser to the Vietnamese police force, died today in Saigon apparently of a heart attack according to a U S mission spokesman.
Washington AP reports FHA commissioner Philip N. Brownstein signaled a rate hike for FHA loans as pressures on borrowing costs rise since December. He noted increases depend on broader rate trends, with FHA authority allowing up to 6 percent interest and premiums.
