A Kansas City jury remains out without a verdict in the trial over the death of Clifford Kamke. Prosecutors accuse the defendant of murder while defense argues for acquittal amid disputed evidence and testimony.
After 214 hours of deliberation the Wyandotte County jury failed to reach a verdict in the Robert Charles Boatright case. Boatright, 34, is accused of shooting Clifford Kamke near the Hayseed tavern after a tavern dispute. The judge ordered further deliberations with four possible verdicts: first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter, or acquittal.
An Oklahoma City lawyer, John Burton McCaleb, 40, who vanished last autumn, is in critical condition in a Houston hospital and charged with armed robbery and assault to murder. Purvis, the drive-in grocery manager, said a gunman demanded receipts and fled with money as Purvis fired. McCaleb allegedly acted as the robber. The piece notes McCaleb left his law firm last December and now faces unemployment. The article also mentions U.S. electric generating capacity at 254,520 kilowatts.

The Senate bill would tax these trusts in Kansas, possibly slowing fund loss. The committee took no action.
In Ozark Missouri a citizens committee of over 100 members pushes a $75,000 library bond plan to back a 5000 square foot building. If approved the project would receive a federal grant match. A previous bond proposal was defeated last spring.
Missouri attorney general Norman H. Anderson ruled that committing a juvenile to custody until age 18 is invalid. He told Wendell Sears, director of the board of training schools, that the law requires indeterminate juvenile confinement, and any fixed-term commitment violates the law.
A comedy film The President's Analyst written and directed by Theodore J Flicker arrives at the Boulevard Twin Crest Riverside Englewood Metre Dickinser and Shawnee venues. Rubin produced with Paramount distribution.
The film is a psychedelic mega satire directed by Theodore Flicker with James Coburn as a presidential psychiatrist who uncovers state secrets. It roams through a grotesque cast including a liberal dad a karate mom a vicious stool pigeon and a vast corporation using torture tech while federal agents stalk Coburn’s character.
Chicago tenor Robert Johnson has been chosen as the soloist for the 87th Messiah festival in Lindsborg Kansas April 7 14 under the Bethany College Oratorio Society. Conductor Dr Henry Weld announced the selection noting Johnsons appearances with major Chicago and Midwest groups. Dennis E. F. Carlson, 20, found guilty by Sedgwick County District Court of wounding Sheriff Vern Miller and three Black youths in a August 3 shooting during racial tensions. Jury opted for wounding by negligence. March 8 set for sentencing motions. A second youth, Gary S. Shreve, 20, faces trial with Carlson. two others await trial.
Dennis F. Crayne, 19, of Lewisburg Kansas, was arrested near Madison Wisconsin and charged with armed robbery in the abduction and robbery of a Cicero Michigan cabdriver. Police say Crayne robbed $26 from Robert Haviatka after forcing him to change clothes then took the wheel before Haviatka escaped near Geneva Illinois. Crayne was held for Illinois authorities.
Wichita city commissioners approve a plan granting police power to remove junk vehicles from private property. The ordinance targets wrecked or dismantled vehicles inoperative for 10 days with fines up to $500 and possible jail time up to one year.
Cape Girardeau officials and the Chamber of Commerce estimate the 1970 census will show about 35,000 residents, up from 24,947 in 1960. School enrollments at Southeast Missouri State College and broader community development are cited as key growth drivers.
