The Death of Gregorio del Pilar in Aguinaldo Pass
From a Chicago Tribune dispatch dated Manila December 18 1809 the writer recalls the December 2 battle at Tilad pass where Gregorio del Pilar, a young Filipino general, fell. The report follows the clash with Major Marshs Thirty third Volunteer Infantry, noting Pilar inspired his troops before dying under sharp fire and the American ascent past the second entrenchment. The text also recounts the soldiers looting Pilar’s gear, the diary and letters captured, and the lingering questions about his legacy and the broader war.
