Minerals Keep Livestock Healthy and Market Dynamics

The article explains vital minerals for livestock, noting copper iron cobalt and other trace elements are essential. It cites regional shortages in counties like Dade Clallam San Diego and Aroostook and advises mineral-balanced rations or soil mineral enhancement. It also discusses fall meat prices, supply-demand dynamics, and how packer prices influence producers.

Supplemental Mineral for Wintering Range Ewes

Thirteen minerals are needed for animal health but not all are required in every mix. In Montana, sodium, chlorine, iodine, phosphorus, and possibly cobalt are lacking for wintering ewes. Iodine deficiency causes lambs with big necks and thin wool. Use stabilized iodized salt for pregnant ewes with a history of such births. Phosphorus deficiency risks abortions and weak lambs. aim 0.16 to 0.18 percent phosphorus in feed. Many hays are low in phosphorus. bone meal and phosphates can help, mixed with salt for palatability. Cobalt supports paunch microbes. add 1 ounce per 100 pounds of stock salt to guard against appetite loss. Cobalt salts are acceptable forms. Editor note: nutrition principles apply to most livestock in many regions.
