Kerrville theatres Rialto Arcadia and Rio join national $250000 Movie Quiz Contest. Five thousand five hundred and four chances to win, first prize fifty thousand dollars. Dock Boyle, manager, promotes famous stars, music, comedy, drama and epic film highlights as part of the promotion.
Poll taxes for 1939 fall due starting October first with a slate of key election dates. Absentee balloting opens October 18 for the general election, while November 3 is the last day for general absentee voting. November 8 is election day and November 13 to 18 cover final expense reports. The State Election Board will canvass state and district officer returns by November 23. The attorney general notes most officers qualify in December, with January 1 as the common qualification date for many offices. The 1939 Texas Legislature convenes January 10 and will tally governor and lieutenant governor results by January 17, ahead of inauguration.
In Junction 3 the show window at E. O. Lowren's Boot Shop displays relics and curious natural objects drawing purists and visitors. Exhibits include old pistols locks spurs animal bones rattlesnake rattlers and a Javelina hog skull. Also noted are tree limb formations and the Felps family enlarging their hillside home in West Junction. Eagles from Junction and Texas City High School held a scrimmage at Pioneer on the Winship ranch Segovia community with Coach Beasley observing.
Ethel Merman stars in Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band at the Arcadia Theatre with Tyrone Power Don Ameche and Alice Faye. The wartime songs mark three decades of changing tempos and memories as Merman recalls singing at rallies and drives during World War I era.
Markets San Antonio Texas Sept 12 hogs receipts 700 market active and generally 25 cents higher than late last week packing sows steady top eight dollars and sixty cents for most good to choice 175 to 230 pound offerings. Cattle receipts 600 calves light due to rains trading more active live than late last week on most classes stocker cows and calves scarce bulls and cows range values. Sheep receipts none market slow on holdovers goats present Angora goats bring one to a dollar seventy five.
Frank E. Voight of Dallas and J. H. Behrens of Brady were business visitors in Junction Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Coke R. Stevenson Jr and daughter Scottie Gayle were business visitors in Kerrville last week. Mr. and Mrs. J S Hoover and family were Roosevelt visitors Sunday.
Judge M. E. Blackburn traveled to Austin on legal business on Wednesday, accompanied by his son William.
