Tax and liquor bills move through Texas House debate
The Texas House passed an omnibus tax bill raising natural resource levies by 25 percent after three days of debate and sent it to the Senate. The House also backed Emmett Morse’s bill to legalize liquor by the drink in wet counties after two days of bitter discussion, 65 to 49. Morse stepped aside to let the tax bill proceed, fueling trade talk between liquor and tax factions. Debates stretched on, with filibusters led by several members. The Senate’s fate for the tax bill remains uncertain as lawmakers consider substantial expenditure cuts. Ernest C. Thompson was unanimously re elected chairman of the interstate oil conservation panel in Houston. Rates for West Texas livestock freight relief hang on ongoing litigation in Austin.
